Hi

I am currently waiting for my operation to have them removed to improve my chances with IVF, have you had yours removed for the same reason?? Hope your o.k? xx

Hi Both!

One of the commonest conditions with Fallopian tubes is called “hydrosalpinx”, which when translated, simply means water in the tube! Fallopian tubes have a natural lubrication in them to allow sperm to swim and the egg to travel down. Occasionally, the end of the tube(s) called “fimbriae” stick together. This then blocks the “exit” for excess fluid to escape. There is then only one way out for this fluid and that is through the womb end of the tube. Many consultants now believe that this excess of fluid can prevent implantation of a developing embryo, as it can be “washed” out. Because of this the tubes are often dealt with by removing them. Other options might be available by performing surgery on the tubes, but this could lead to scarring and adhesions anyhow, hence “removal”. Obviously, this results with only being able to get pregnant through IVF, but is generally considered to be the safer option.

Sometimes removal of the tubes is performed when large amounts of scarring within the tubes are present. This could encourage ectopic pregnancies, especially if the sperm can swim up the tubes, but a fertilised egg might not be able to travel back down to implant in the womb. An awful nuisance for you both to endure, but your consultant will have your best interests at heart, and eventually positive pregnancies will ensue. I wish you both well with the eventual outcome. If you have not already done so, why not have a look at our website infertilitynetworkuk.com and see how we can support you further at this time.

IV had both of mine out, one July last year the other one November this year, im finding it really weird and abit lonely, as my partner for 8 years does'nt really understand what im going through, im 24 years old, we have been on the IVF list for a year now, start in 5 weeks, im finding that really weird aswell never thought id be needing it, its all a shock a first, I became really depressed, I left work, I was in such a bad place, and no matter what people said or done just didn't help me feel better, i was so miserable and lost, BUT once my IVF appointments started happening I feel so much better I really do, I look everywhere for information that makes me feel better
