OHSS - unsure

Hi, I'm entering day 5 (nearly 92 hours) after my egg collection. I thought I had no real OHSS symptoms, apart from just feeling uncomfortable when walking like while on the medication, but pressing just to the right of my very lower abdomen hurts and I would say I now have an "uncomfortable" feeling.

Not nauseaus, been going to the bathroom OK - am I over thinking? Supposed to have day 5 transfer tomorrow am!

Hi Gabby. To be on the safe side, drink plenty of water and keep an eye on your urine output, lots of light Coloured urine. Don’t get constipated, as poo passing by sore ovaries can be painful. It could be a bit of infection. Take paracetamol if needed for pain, but no anti inflammatories like ibuprofen. Hopefully all will settle down, but if worried at all, speak to your doctor. Diane

From what you’re describing, I think that your ovaries are swollen as they are expected to be at this point in the process, even if you stopped the stims. It takes a while for them to come down.

After I went through my egg collection, I took paracetamol for the next 3 days as recommended and then I stopped. And I got really worried as all of a sudden my ovaries were hurting badly every time I peed. And given that you’re told to drink lots of water, I was peeing a lot, so it was pretty worrying. But upon talking to my clinic, they seemed pretty calm about it and said it was to be expected because the ovaries are so much bigger after treatment and the bladder must push against them when it empties. They recommended to continue the paracetamol and drink lots of water and the ovaries came down after another 5 days I think.

From my understanding, the OHSS symptoms are more severe and people often end up going to A&E. But if you’re worried, just contact your clinic and they’ll be able to advise better. Good luck with the transfer! Xx

Hi! I developed OHSS on day 5 after egg collection, the symptoms came in as I was waiting for a fresh transfer. For me, they were very painful cramps that I had to breathe through. Quite unlike anything I had experienced before. I also felt quite bloated. The pre-transfer scan showed the liquid gathering in my abdomen so we did a freeze all at the very strong recommendation of the consultant. It was 100 % the right thing to do, though I was very disappointed at the time. It gave my body time to recover. The OHSS didn't escalate (it would have with a successful implantation due to the doubling of the HCG every two days, that's when people are at risk of severe OHSS and hospitalisation). It resolved in a few days when my period came. I was told by my clinic to have a protein-rich diet, i.e. a few protein shakes or yoghurts a day because they help absorb the building up liquid. Paracetamol didn't help but a hot water bottle did. What you are describing doesn't sound like the symptoms I experienced but I am not an expert. The good news is that your clinic will be able to tell when they scan you tomorrow for the transfer. Make sure to share your concerns. Very best of luck! I do hope it is not OHSS, it's not pleasant.

I felt pretty good after egg collection and following days, but day 5 onwards was definitely the worst in terms of bloating and feeling uncomfortable. I suddenly felt very full of liquid, to the extent it hurt to turn over in bed, my lower back and hips were also painful. I rang the clinic and they said it wasn’t OHSS, just standard bloating and take pain meds. It did resolve itself at around day 8.

The nurse said that OHSS is very rare and unlikely to get it unless you’ve had over 25 eggs.. but it’s always best to air on the side of caution.

Hope you feel better soon
