blighted ovum

I had a miscarriage in September 2022. I had a blighted ovum miscarriage (empty sac, no fetal pole). I found out I was pregnant again in January, supposed to be due September 2023. Due to previously having a miscarriage, they asked me to come in for a vaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks. They told me that there was just the sac again and had me come back at 7 weeks. I had 2 hcg tests done 48 hours a part and it went from 925 to 12500. At 7 weeks they said that the sac got bigger and there’s something inside of it but they could not conclusively tell me that this pregnancy is viable or not. They scheduled another ultrasound for this Friday (8 weeks and 3 days). I am still experiencing normal pregnancy symptoms this far in, unlike the last time but I just had brown discharge similar to what I had the first miscarriage. Has anyone had this happen before? What are my odds of having 2 blighted ovum pregnancies back to back?

hi I really hope everything is ok tomorrow on your scan. Was it a natural pregnancy? If so it could be that you ovulated later and dates could be wrong, baby just needs to catch up.

I’ve had a blighted ovum before, but I then went on to have a successful pregnancy.

Wishing you all the best x

thank you, that’s what we’re hoping! Yes it was a natural pregnancy.

Hi

I was also in a very similar situation in the summer. At my 7wk scan, they could see the sac and yolk but no fetal pole. They asked me to have another scan a week later. At the next scan they could see that the sac had grown but still no fetal pole. As there had been a change in size they couldn’t say it was a viable pregnancy so they asked me to come in for another scan the week after.

That scan showed that the sac had collapsed and it was still empty and they advised it was a non viable pregnancy.

You have been advised that there is something in the sac so I would still stay positive and hopeful as some embryos develop a little later. I have read stories on here with ladies having an empty sac at their first scan and then going on to hearing the heartbeat at their next scan!! This could also be the same for you!

Wishing you all the luck and positivity. 💕🤞🏽
