Can we really improve egg quality? (Sugar indulgence)

Hello

I know a lot of us try healthy eating/sleep before the cycle to increase egg quality.

Do you believe this makes a real impact in improving egg quality, resulting in a live birth?

I think I do this in order to gain some control. I'm almost 39, with good AMH but I realise that egg quality will be a factor.

I'm on all the recommended supplements in addition to wheatgrass, spirilina, chlorella, maca powders. I've given up coffee and alcohol. I do weekly acupuncture.

But I do struggle with sleep and sugar intake. Especially in the last 10 days, I went off the rails!! (visiting family, too much temptation around me, struggling with willpower and even less sleep than usual. Lost count of how many chocolates I've binged on).

Also, 3 weeks ago, I had a tooth extracted, so I'm worried about all the drugs in my body from that.

Would love to hear other experiences on whether you think lifestyle has a huge impact on egg quality.

Hi Anon

If you check my page I asked a similar question and got some really great responses for you to take a look at.

I personally think that some supplements etc can potentially improve egg quality but the underlying factor seems to be age, seen as we cant change that the supplements etc give us something to control (an illusion I'm sure!)

I had my EC around a month ago and although I did take the supplements from 'it starts with the egg' I did eat chocolate, drink coffee and tea and have a few takeaways. I really wanted to be completely clean living for a couple of months but it's so tough and the process is so draining that a few treats here and there were a must for me.

Very best wishes x

I remember asking this question to my doctors and they said unfortunately there isn't much evidence regarding improving eggs that are frankly just too old. We may get lucky to find one or two with good DNA but it's not easy. At 41, my AMH was 0.16 when trying for a second baby and it took me well over 12 cycles/eggs to find one good one. I did a mix of IVF, IUI, and naturally trying. I didn't take any supplements besides prenatals and ate the same things as before. Had coffee every day, didn't bother with acupuncture. That said I do try to eat healthy and organic regardless, just to keep my body in optimal shape.

I think you can probably optimise the quality of your eggs based on what you have but I dont think you can necessarily improve the quality of your eggs if you see what I mean!? I know many people on here will disagree and there are so many great stories of people who have taken some supplements and got much better egg quality but I am not sure its ever been scientifically proven because if it had been I am pretty sure our clinics would be filling us up with everything!! I have taken pretty much every supplement under the sun over the past 4/5 years and they have made absolutely no difference to my egg quality - it has continue to deteriorate.. but then I am older (now 44) so I guess thats the natural process. Thats not to say the supplements didnt make the best they could be.

I also think its about mental health and quality of life too. Bad sleep and overindulging occasionally on sweets is not (I believe) going to make your egg quality any worse. Some of my most long term pregnancies I've got pregnant when I've drunk alcohol and been on holiday - some of my worst IVF rounds I have been like an angel

its a balancing act I think. Heaps of luck xx
