First IVF appointment

Hi everyone. I received my first IVF appointment yesterday to test my AMH levels and check my BMI which is really exciting. We were told I would receive my first appointment in 6-9 months and it would be a year wait before treatment started, but this came through after only a month which was extremely quick! I wondered if anyone could tell me how long after having this first appointment you had to wait for treatment to begin? I understand it varies across boards (I’m in Scotland) but is it standard practice to have this and then still have a long wait? I don’t want to get my hopes up that it will be quicker if this is what normally happens. Thanks!

Yes this is common. In Scotland at least, you'll have the initial consult and testing first so they can decide what your treatment will be. Then there was a follow-up to tell you results and the "plan." They used to start with Clomid or IUI if it made sense first during the IVF waiting list time. When I was in Scotland wait list was 34 months, so it was a VERY long wait from the initial consult to treatment. (And you had to redo all but genetics testing again once you got to the top of wait list as it had been so long;) )

Good luck!

34 months?! Oh gosh, I really hope it isn’t that long that must have been so difficult. I’m glad I asked, I was starting to get excited that maybe they weren’t as busy as they indicated and it might happen some time this year so thank you for replying.

They'll tell you the wait list time and that will be what it is. This was years ago when most trusts had wait lists of 2-4yrs as standard. As I understand it, most are more in the region of 6-18 mos now. In my experience they stick pretty close to the wait time they tell you. They take folks privately as well so pretty rare that the time will be less than "promised."

Basically, once you come to the top of the wait list they'll reach out with another appointment. But yes you get excited when it starts moving and then there is just more waiting ;)

You think you’d get used to all the waiting with infertility but it just gets harder at every new step! I’ll keep my excitement for the next appointment 😂. Thanks again.

I had my initial consultation dec 2019 and then unfortunately covid came! So i only am just in the process of my ivf cycle now. But not sure what it would look like pre covid time wise. Hopefully its not too long for you! All the best xx

Thanks for replying, I guess I’ll ask the question next week and find out more then. Sorry to hear covid caused you a big delay, hope your cycle goes well! x
