Coming off hormones - affect on mood?

I recently stopped taking progynova and progesterone pessaries, after a BFN, and have since felt extremely irritable and on edge (abit like i feel before my period - but worse). Anyone had a similar experience? There is obviously the emotional fallout as a result of getting a BFN, but this feels like something different.

I had to stop progesterone and oestrogen after a very early miscarriage at 6 weeks and it caused a complete breakdown. I've been unable to sleep, eat and I'm so so anxious all the time. I'm anxious person anyways but now I'm at the edge of the edge and it's really horrible. It started a few days after stopping my medication (this was a week after I knew it was not going to be a successful pregnancy) and now 8 days later I'm slightly feeling better. I think it's both the heartbreak and then the hormones that is making me feel so very bad. I hope you feel a tiny bit better soon. It is really such a difficult journey. Hang in there and take care. Sending hugs ♥️

Sorry for your loss, and that you've been feeling so awful. This was my first round, and i really underestimated the toll it would take on my mental health. Its unforgiving. Hope you feel better soon x

Hi!

I’m so sorry to hear this round didn’t work for you. I really hope you’re doing ok hopefully my experience on progynova might help abit -

In essence I found the complete opposite - when I started the progynova it sent my emotions on a horrendous rollacoaster and everything seemed really bleak (very unlike me). When the round failed and I stopped taking the drugs despite feeling obviously sad due to it failing I felt like a huge black cloud was lifted.

I spoke with the clinic about it and they talked about how awful progynova can be for some women - no one reports being happy on it as such but for some it can really mess about your hormones.

I’m on the progynova again and it’s done the same thing. Absolutely horrendous. Should this not work we’ve already discussed a natural round. Is this the first time you’ve taken progynova?

I found a really interesting medical article about it on the internet somewhere which spoke about how dramatic changes in your estrogen levels can cause the types of hormonal reactions you’re experiencing. I would suggest therefore that whilst you’ve come off them the drop in hormone level in your body has caused this. It should in theory level out and ease off.

Just have faith that you’ve recognised it’s unlike you and therefore most probably the drugs and it’ll pass.

Stay strong x

Thanks Sakura88 - that's really helpful. I expected it the other way around. I always struggled with the pill (used to make me feel awful). But i felt absolutely fine whilst taking it (it was my first time on progynova). My situation is complicated because i have a history of generalised anxiety disorder/OCD (though i havent had a flare up in over 10 years), which can be triggered by traumatic events - IVF/a BFN would definitely quality! And so it could be abit of that too.

Anyway, feeling abit better today.

Wishing you all the best this round x
