Prostap injections and bleeding

hello everyone,

I’m having a bit of a tough time at the moment, I started prostap injections last year in may without HRT until December, and up until present day having the injection every three months with my daily tibilone tablet.

The thing is when I started everything was fine no pain, no bleeding, it was pure bliss! Then at the end of April I started bleeding, I was first told that it’s because my injection was due. So they booked me in sooner (maybe a week or two earlier)

Two weeks after I had the injection at the start of may I started bleeding again, it lasted for around two weeks, I had around a week or 10 days with no bleeding but it came back again. This cycled the same in June and the beginning of July. I told the endo nurses who said I would go onto zoladex next in July but my surgery date came up so they stuck with prostap.

Has anyone had these kinds of experiences with prostap? I know initially you can get bleeding but this is a year into the treatment and taking HRT for about 6months.

I’ve had bleeding since my operation 3 days post op then I had a week clear followed by another 10 days bleeding and thankfully I’m okay now but surely this isn’t normal?

I’m planning to go on the contraceptive injection in October when the prostap has cleared my system but I’m just worried that maybe it’s stopped working on me and I should get the depo injection sooner.

Hi Leenie,

Sorry to hear you have had issues bleeding with Prostap. My situation is similar but I wasn't taking it long enough to see continued bleeding. So I started Prostap in April last year plus the depot contraceptive and then HRT 6 months later. It wasn't till January this year that the bleeding started to come through. I can only attribute it to the HRT as my symptoms seemed to get worse after starting it. I know its not supposed to do this but my consultant thinks the Prostap wasn't supressing my ovaries enough!

So going from my situation, I had both drugs in my system so I think you would be fine having the contraception depot (medroxyprogesterone) sooner rather than waiting for it in October - but maybe double check with your consultant or endo nurse if you can?

With regards to my operations, I had post-surgical bleeding for about a day after excision of the endo and a hysteroscopy (with removal of polyps too). After my second operation there was very little bleeding but there was less endo to remove. I think it would be worth mentioning it to your consultant/nurse who may have more answers for the reasons?

Hi Leenie

I'm sorry you're having trouble with your prostap injections, I had similar experiences to you where I'd have pain/bleeding when I was told I shouldn't. I actually found the HRT was the issue and so took Utrogestan and Oestrogel. Utrogestan (progesterone) is given in a set dose, but the Oestrogel you can increase/decrease pumps as you feel needed. I found the more Oestrogel I used the more bleeding I had. Maybe see if you can ask if you can change your HRT, see if that helps? Good luck 😊 x

I too am on Prostap. 3rd injection this week. Previously on Zolafex and evorel patches. Zoladex was great for a year, then stopped working. Changed it to Prostap, still not working. I worked out with my consultant this week that in 214 days I’ve had 35 bleed free days. I was put on iron tablets yesterday by my gp. She didn’t even bother to do bloods as my levels were low in June but no one bothered to tell me! I’m not sure that having the injections earlier would be of any benefit, surely it would cause your system to be in more upheaval? You would have more of the drug/hormone reaction going on. But I don’t know I’m not medical. I’ve not got a date for my full hysterectomy the beginning of October so in a way some light at the end of the tunnel, some ways scary time ahead of not knowing what it will be like after the op. Hopefully you will get some answers and relief soon. Best of luck.

How are you? I am 10 weeks in to prostap and at first no bleeding but then i did have a period then i started experiencing really bad pelvic pain for a few days then i would bleed and i have been bleeding 7 days straight now along with a burning pain in my bits. did you experience this and did it stop?
