Endo and adenomyosis with bad gastro symptoms?

Hello,

I've been experiencing severely painful periods - pain starting at ovulation and getting increasingly worse up to my period, together with nausea, diarrhea, dizzy spells just before period. My first gynae suspects endo and adenomyosis from the ultrasound, and put me on Prostap3 and Tibolone. However, after an initial improvement, the pelvic pain and and gastro symptoms have returned with a vengeance.

I've moved back to the south east so I've seen a local consultant Gynaecologist privately, as I couldn't see him on the NHS until Oct! He thinks it's adenomyosis and probably pelvic adhesions from my previous abdominal surgeries. He wants to do an MRI scan, then possibly a laparoscopy and maybe a hysterectomy. He said my gastro symptoms are unusual and there might be another cause. I've read that you can get gastro symptoms with Endo and other menstrual disorders.

I'm trying not to worry but feeling this rubbish is keeping me awake at night as I'm concerned that there's something more sinister going on.

Is anyone else experiencing severe pain, gastro symptoms with Endo??

Thanks in advance.

Hello I have gastro problems with my endometriosis and adenomyosis. Often my stools are very loose in the run up to a period and during sorry if tmi.Certain foods irritate my gut, bloat me up and cause pain. It’s almost like you can feel your bowel moving. Do you experience that?

Great your doctor wants to do an MRI for adenomyosis, sounds like you have a good healthcare worker.

I am currently on decepeptyl injections as I was having horrendous labour like pains, bleeding for months on end. Seemingly the pain comes from endometriosis and the bleeding non stop is adenomyosis. Having a hysterectomy, just waiting to speak to the consultant.

Hello, I thought I'd typed a reply but it doesn't seem to have sent!

Yes, I experience similar symptoms. It's really worrying and I've been misdiagnosed with IBS,/functional dyspepsia.

Does the treatment you're having induce menopause? Does it help with your symptom

I'm finding Prostap isn't helping at all. The only thing it's stopped is the bleeding, but the pelvic pain is bad xx

Bowel and digestive symptoms are extremely common with endometriosis if that is of any help. Lots of people get fobbed off with the IBS thing. xx

I had adeno and endo and suffered with terrible gastro pain and many symptoms; Was constantly bloated, had terrible constipation and severe rectal bleeding and vomiting around my period. I went on to have a hysterectomy, which although didn’t cure my endo, massively improved my quality of life and reduced my symptoms. When they went in they found that the endo and adhesions had caused my rectum to be ‘wrapped up like a ball of string’ and I had patches of endo in my pouch of Douglas. As other people have mentioned, It is not uncommon for endo to cause gastro symptoms, but it is regularly dismissed as IBS. I had MRI’s and ultra sounds and non of this was picked up, but thankfully, I had a team that understood my symptoms and history. Really hope you get the answers and relief you need xxx

Thank you. I was really concerned when the doc said that there must be something else going on because I'm still getting gastro symptoms on Prostap3. Before being referred to gynae, I was referred to gastroenterology and underwent an endoscopy, which was normal. I was then sent for an ultrasound because my GP suspected gallbladder, again that was normal.

My new consultation said that Prostap3 wouldn't relieve adeno symptoms, and a hysterectomy is the only treatment that will work.

Re the hysterectomy, I'm worried about having to take a lot of time off work as I'm self-employed and my husband's a student. I know that worrying about all this is making my symptoms worse, but I can't help it.

How long did it take you to recover from your hysterectomy? xxx

I had an abdominal hysterectomy and had a few complications so it was quite a long recovery - I would say about 6 weeks. I was up and about pretty quickly afterwards (my son was 5 at the time so I still needed to be up and about at times), but found I would need an afternoon nap and to put my feet up regularly. The more rest you get in those earlier days, the quicker your recovery. I tried to do far too much too soon and it really put me back so it’s important you take care of yourself. If you have any questions about the surgery, please feel free to DM me xxx

Hello, I suffered with severe endo pain for over 5 years, my endo was diagnosed on the 2nd laparoscopy in 2016 when they removed my ovaries & tubes. I continued to have pelvic pain and constipation with severe bloating while taking Ellest duo HRT patches. In 2018 I had an endoscopy procedure to check out my bowel and gut, this ended up not being related to any of my gynae symptoms, the one thing they did find was that I have an unusual long colon which they said could add to being constipated. I have just had a Total hysterectomy in March 2021. Diagnosis was adenomyosis , this was attached to my enlarged uterus. I had no idea I had been suffering with this as well as endo. I am now pain free after all those years of suffering. There is hope for you, good luck 🤞🏼

Hi, Having the MRI scan can be a positive to trying to rule out the problem, please don’t be too worried xx

Definitely definitely make them look at this properly. My sister had her hysterectomy in January 2020 and had to have part of her colon removed because the endo had spread and caused blockages. She is absolutely fine and healthy now, so this isn’t a horror story. It’s good that you’re back in SE - the endo specialists in London are excellent.

She and I both take laxido powder to help ease stool movement, so I recommend getting that in the meantime. Also make sure you drink plenty of water, as dehydration is a huge issue for gastric issues.

I also take buscopan for IBS and it has really helped.

Hope you feel more comfortable very soon x

Thank you for your reply, and I'm sorry to hear about your sister. Glad to hear that she's fine and healthy now .

I'm having my MRI scan tomorrow. I'm a bit anxious that they'll find something sinister. I know I shouldn't worry but I've been feeling so rubbish, my mind is going into overdrive xxx
