Pain Clinic ... does it help?

Hello :) I am currently trying to manage endometriosis and adenomyosis and the pain and amount of painkillers is gettinf me down.

When i mentioned this to my gynie after my surgery they said that I could not be referred to pain clinic as they don't do it for pelvic pain. However i am seeing more and more people on my social media who are going to pain clinics.

Is my gynie just fobbing me off? Is it worth trying to get a referral? And has anyone been and found it useful?

Thanks :)

HiYour gynae is talking rubbish, a BSGE centre has a pain consultant listed.

Your consultant or GP can refer you.

Last year I went to A&E and spoke to the pain nurse (weekday is much better) they gave me Tramadol and sent a request to GP to refer back to pain clinic, they couldn’t do it direct, GP referred, but it got screwed up as they sent a question. I paid to see the consultant that was listed on the BSGE site and then went on his NHS list. He thinks it’s residual nerve pain, but nothing he can help with a nerve block. I’m not so sure.

From that I went on Amitriptyline and recently Pregabalin.

What are you taking at the moment?

It does depend on your GP, but they can prescribe most things, these days you have to tell the GP what you want to try as they aren’t that forthcoming with controlled drugs.

My gp and gynie have massively let me down of late, ended up in a and e after bleeding for 100 days and I've only just been seen by a member of the gynie unit but not one of the endo team that im under. At moment im on codydramol, buscopan and mefanamic acid but getting such cramp in my legs and shooting pains that its difficult to sit for very long.

I shall defo try again for the pain clinic, i felt i was being fobbed off but as it was just before my surgery i thought id wait and see how I went... sadly covid has made things so much harder than before.

Thank you for advice, I will get onto that tomorrow:)

I’ve just started reading a book on chronic pain that would help understand pain is types etc. It’s by a leading pain clinic consultant in uk Dr deepak ravindram you can get on amazon. Stay positive I know it’s so hard and frustrating.

Let us know how you get on, don’t ask as such, tell them what you want/need, but probably nice than I’ve done in the past 😂.See what they say in changing pain meds, pain nurse, who is head nurse of department, said they find Tramadol works better for endo, she was also the first medical person to say it’s not in your head.

Good luck 🙂

Hello.I’m also in daily pain with endo and adeno despite surgeries and awaiting appointment with pain team.

It is a long wait but they definitely do offer a service for pelvic pain.

What a load of rubbish they’re talking. How could they not have a pain team for endo and adeno? It’s excruciatingly painful!

Best wishes xxx

See if you can get a referral to see a physio who deals with pelvic pain. Alot of people with Endo have found a great deal of relief. I've had 2 fantastic physios. The fact that they believe you is pain relief in itself!

Oh my yes they are hun, I’ve been waiting to see pain clinic I got referred after endo treatment excision surgery, but they offered it to me as I was still struggling after and still am to this day I went back to my doctors other day as it’s taken a while to hear back ( I’m guessing due to lockdowns) but my doctor is still chasing it for me , of course it’s an option hun I got referred straight by the hospital as part of my review after treatment, go back to the gyne/ review nurse about it yes 100% good luck xx

Hi hun. I’ve endo and adeno and I have been attending a pain specialist for 4 years. They definitely do deal with endo! I am on tramadol and gabapentin. I’ve had lots of surgeries, had a nerve block and tried all kinds of treatments. I’m waiting on a lidocaine/ketamine infusion at the moment. As it’s nerve damage and issues with endo it’s an iv they inject for 5 hours amd it’s supposed to ease the pain for longer intervals. You should look up your closest pain specialist clinic and give them a call x
