Anyone trying Mirena (levonorgestrel) & Cerazette (desogestrel) together?

Hi,

Is there anyone trying Mirena (levonorgestrel) and mini pill Cerazette (desogestrel) together?

I have endometriosis (stage IV), and it floored me, and left me in so much pain last month that I couldn't think or talk. I had two trips to the A&E by ambulance.

Now, I have a true fear of my period coming next month. Nope, No period wanted here! To me, periods mean the endometriosis is likely up to no good (growing?) in my abdomen at the same time.

I've had the Mirena put in by a gynaecologist, so maybe that will do the trick. However, I've read some women bleed with their periods while they have the Mirena, particularly in the first 12 weeks.

My GP told me that it's ok to take the mini pill at the same time as having the Mirena and that can help to stop periods. I have a box of Cerazette at the ready.

Now, I need to decide what to do this month.

A) Take the Cerazette (with Mirena) to do my best to keep away the period and potential trip to A&E for pain. Knowing there will be some minimal side effects from the mini pill - probably a case of the blues for me (I used to have that when I was on the mini-pill years ago).

B) Just go with the Mirena, and hope I don't get a period this month - or that it will be much less intense than last month. The consultant said side-effects are lower for the Mirena than pills.

This is a temporary approach while awaiting an MRI and surgery (I sincerely want to stay out of A&E).

Is anyone else using both the Mirena and mini-pill? Is it keeping the periods away?

Hope your condition get better! x

Hi AkiBoo! Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one thinking of doing this.

Can I ask you - did you decide to take one mini-pill a day, or did you go up to two mini-pills daily (in addition to the Mirena)?

I've done my homework reading, and I can see from the Mirena information that about 20% of women using the Mirena stop having their periods after the first year (and this percentage increases after the first year). I'm very keen to aim for "therapeutic amenorrhea" (the term I've found for skipping periods). I've not yet found any articles or research papers that say what dosage of the mini-pill would go with the Mirena to stop periods. I have, however, read that for endometriosis, a double dose of the mini-pill is often recommended (when it's the mini-pill alone).

My plan is to start taking the mini-pill at a time that I think will help to avoid irregular spotting. I'm going to start the mini-pill (in addition to the Mirena) in the middle of the luteal phase when the body's natural production of progesterone peaks (that's 6 to 8 days after ovulation). I'm imagining that maybe one Cerezette daily might be enough to stop periods since I already have the Mirena.

Hi,

I statted to take 1 a day. Which was fine and stopped periods.

Because I have endo on liver and diaphgram, pain on upper body does not go away.

So my consultant suggested to take two , one in AM and another at night.

However, this seems to have caused bleeding!

So I returned to 1 a day, which seems to suits me.

I hope you find right dosage. xxx

Hi Akiboo, thanks for sharing how you're approaching this. It's really helpful to hear from someone else who's finding their way along too. 🙂

Hey 👋🏻 Can I ask how this worked out? I’m 3 weeks post endo excision & had mirena IUD fitted during the surgery. Period started & been bleeding for 11 days now… tempted to restart Cerazatte, which I took for 1 month before surgery without side effects. Be interested if this worked for you! Thank you
