Bone and dental health

A cup of milk contains almost 30 percent of the daily requirement of calcium for adults. Milk also contains potassium and magnesium. These minerals are important for healthy bones and teeth. Dairy provides almost 50 percent of the calcium in a typical American diet.

* Almond milk: Low fat; high calcium (if enriched);

* Soy milk: Contains similar amount of proteins;

* Oat milk: Lower in fat; high fiber

* Coconut milk: Low calories and carbs; half the fat

"MyPlate, the USDA's current nutritional guide enacted in 2011, suggests 2 to 3 cups of dairy for adults daily, but its definition is broadened to include yogurt and cheese, as well as calcium-fortified soy milk."(2)

"A just-released study in The BMJ that followed more than 45,000 men and 61,000 women in Sweden age 39 and older had similar results. Milk consumption as adults was associated with no protection for men, and an increased risk of fractures in women. It was also associated with an increased risk of death in both sexes."(3)

"Soy milk may be used as a substitute for dairy milk by individuals who are vegan or lactose intolerant."(4)
