You can definitely detect early warning signs of diabetes.Anyone with family history, obese, doing a sedentary job and prone to prolonged stress should go for blood sugar tests. These tests can start from age of 30 on wards at yearly intervals. The tests are inexpensive and not painful.Based on the results, you can make lifestyle changes and save you from aggravated diabetes.

I agree with the above suggestion. I would like to add the following.....

Since during the course of a day ( 24 hours ) blood sugar varies depending upon your food intake, the carbs-protein-fat portions of your food, (Remember they metabolise at different rates), your activeness in terms of nature of expense account of the calories.

So, a fasting early morning blood sugar (around 7.00 ) along with anothr sugar test taken 2 hours after breakfast would give the doctor a reasonable idea of your 'sugar' status. HbA1c , a test which tells how good was your blood sugar control during the preceding 2 to 3 monthsis also a very useful test. C-peptide test , which is based on the release of C-peptide, which has a retention time of about 5 times more than insulin, gives us information about the insulin release in the body.

The result of this test inin %.(Percentage). One word of caution about this test.: It does not quantify the insulin release as we would like to know or understand but can grade the insulin production in the body as NIL (or verylow),medium and high .

Difference of opinion exists in some interpretations of this test,;

NIL would definitely correspond to Type I diabetes.

Medium (My word ) would mean diabetes person with medium insulin release ( May be because his pancreas is refusing to work since long) or a non diabetes personwith reasonably good controlofblood glucose.

High (My word) would mean diabetes person with high insulin release ( May be because his pancreas is working overtime ) because of the nature of food ingested or a non diabetes person with very good control of blood glucose.

Yes, this test can be very ambiguous when you want to know the exact quantity of insulin but is very good indicator to the doctors to assess your pancreas and atleastpick up Type I diabetes very early.

thanks for the interpretation of the test ,but a layman like me would have to go to a professional to seek advice .is it possible to understand without anyones help, regards to u .

Each person is different in his food habits, his quantum of activity and importently his metabolism; Some are in his hands, Some are in the genes.

So, It is always better to be armed with knowledge about the various tests and then take the advice of the doctors.

Reg the above tests,it is something like haemoglobin levels, You can compare your value against the normal or standard values mentioned in the report and get an idea. But C- peptide test results interpretation is slighly difficult. The knowledge helps but the final word should be of the doctor.

I am answering as a layman.....

I would first advise anybody to carefully identify any off- the- normal symptoms in the body which persist for more than say a week. Any machine has to give some early symtoms.

(Having said that I wouldlike to add the following.). Five years back, I was perfectly healthy, No specific symptoms to tell the doctor, except for seasonal colds. Used to sleep soundly within 1 minute of going to bed. To my friends, I used to tell that if I did not sleep within 5 minutes, I would consider myself as suffering from insomnia. And then......

Very near to taking VR from service, I decided to take some tests since every thing was free, ( covered under CHSS scheme, regular deduction from salary)

I was having diabetes,140 (PP); Under medication since then, Sugar Under control now, changing my food habits after reading so many great souls pouring out their experiences and suggestions in the medium called NET....

Seeing remarkable improvements after life style change. ( Some day I will write about that which would be of some marginal interest to some people.)

Coming back to your question, better go in for a minor checkup (sugar, BP,lipids) . If things are OK, fine: If NOT OK then also fine, since you have detected things very early. This is the mind frame in which I went to my first test at the age of 57 years. Once your results are in hand, you can decide, on the advice of doctors, what should be the periodicity of the tests. For example, my medic recently told me to take the next C-peptide test after two or three years. Many doctors are great souls.

Be INFORMED.. Be PROACTIVE... It is your YOUR Health at stake........

Life is NOT a 100m dash where every body runs the same race....

Do write about your experiences, diets, doctor' advices etc.

There are a number of readers in this forum who would like to hear....Do not give an eye for some critical comments.
