Suspicious about supplements

I have taken vitamins since my early twenties, I am now 76...I'm beginning to think they may be responsible for my PD due to all the fillers etc. NONE of my vitamin less friends, relatives, or older co workers have PD.

Maybe, but seems unlikely to me. Any toxins in your environment?

None out of the ordinary. I can trace the subtle beginnings of my PD to about age 55. That wd mean I already had been on vitamins about 35 yrs.

I wish it was that simple, Beehive. I had a very healthy diet and very poor absorption, therefore i need supplements. Lack of vit d where i live is a big issue. There can be factors such as trauma, stress, well water, chemicals, fungus, mold...the list is big.

im just saying that for ex: i f my cbc comes back and says im low on something like vit d..i increase vit d rich foods.....hang tough..

I would not worry about it being supplements. Herbicides, viral infections (I think Shingles were the final straw for my brain) or autoimmune issues seem more likely. Or something else. They don't seem to know. Good luck and may God bless you.

Who knows but probably unlikely. My father as well as myself have taken vitamins and supplements for many years during our lives. My father lived to 87 and died of untreated cancer. My mother had PD but was never keen on meds or supplements, although lived in the country and ate very healthily.

My husband takes supplements now he has PD but never before he got it!

My family have all taken vits etc I am 68 and used to go into health shops with mum as a toddler and so far none of us have PD mum is 88 and very fit for her age

I suppose we can't rule anything out, but there could also be a correlation between health conscious individuals who take vitamins also being less likely to smoke, take painkillers/anti inflammatory meds, drink a bit of wine, comsume coffee etc. All of these things appear to have some protection. I've clearly been too good!😇

I clearly didn't drink enough wine !

I haven't 😈🤭They say we are very rigid in our behaviour or thinking. They say there is a parky personality...i was quite flexible...

I wonder if we will ever have the answers or some kind of common denominator. Glad you've enjoyed yourself. 😉 I think I've become a bit dull and joyless.

My tremors worsened considerably and I got bradykinesia and ataxia after I had my last four amalgam fillings removed, which points to the mercury vapours. Very insidious, especially since it took 2 months for the brain damage to manifest. I'm much improved from chelating mercury according to the Andy Cutler protocol. The vitamins that are part of his protocol have only been beneficial.

Same story for me altho it only took a couple weeks for symptoms to show.

Are you chelating according to the Andy Cutler protocol? Have your symptoms improved?

MarionP profile image
MarionP in reply to Meg024

That's certainly is a definite possibility, Mercury gas and Mercury poisoning. But what is this Andy Cutler protocol you mentioned?

Meg024 profile image
Meg024 in reply to MarionP

You can google Andy Cutler Chelation. There is a FaceBook support group with all the files on how to follow the protocol. It's basically frequent low dose alpha lipoic acid for a 3-day round once a week. It sounds tedious but it soon became quite do-able for me. While levodopa tops up my dopamine deficiency, the chelating of the culprit - mercury - helps restore my confused adrenals and neurotransmitters.

Okay I will check into that, that's a good idea thank you.

I would think that would be unlikely, considering the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s Disease, clinical markers.

If you are 76 and have been taking vitamins that long you might just as well wonder if you have had improved health from taking vitamins! Compared with other people you might have know of that have died earlier?

LAJ I think yours is the better idea.

Yes, you might as well say I’ve been eating food since I was born and now I have PD. Must be the food. I guess there could have been a few things you took that contributed but you can’t just lump every supplement into one category!

I started supplements in my 20's too--for brain fog. I often wonder if some of the supplements that I took caused my PD, which I feel is more likely than toxins in the supplements.

MarionP profile image
MarionP

Well it is certainly appropriate to be suspicious in general about toxins in supplements... And for ingredients that actually don't help or a different than advertised... I know I have mentioned long ago about the problem of lead being put into curcumin supplements because it provides the proper color to be appetizing and there's a whole lot that has been known to be a problem...But about the specific question you're posing that's possibly more on the zebra side of things then the horse side of things.

Unlikely that vitamin supplements would cause PD...in fact, there is a book on Amazon "Parkinson's Disease and B1 Therapy" by Daphne Bryan PhD....many have reduced symptoms of PD..I am trying this on my husband.

Hi, Sorry to all thatI I didn't make myself clear., vitamins have helped me ...It's not vitamins that worry me, it is the pill's components.

Fact is, pd has been described since about 1000 bc. So although your disease might have been caused by supplements, or by that day you walked by a field sprayed with pesticide, or diet soda, or who knows what, it could’ve been bad luck.

By the way my grandfather smoked like a chimney and he got it. I never took supplements (and never smoked) and I got it. I think eating sugar (of all kinds) is a risk factor, but obviously plenty of non-pd folks do that.

I basically think we don’t know!

A lot of the no no’s on that page are from animals and it’s a vegan web page so it’s not the additive is harmful they object to, just that it is from an animal.

Vitamins have nothing to do with Parkinson's disease. PD is triggered by hindrance related to movement. German New Medicine deals with it in detail, and if this obstruction is identified and resolved, the disease will regress.

instead of blaming vitamin supplements...which is ludicrous unless they contain glyphosate...look at Vaccines pesticides toxins unhealthy fast food diets alcohol..big pharma's antibiotics and their hundreds of pills with their plethora of side effects...and finally stress...but that's just my opinion it could be too much vitamin C....

Toxins, toxins, everywhere. Trigger to a weakened immune system. Sure, supplement fillers can carry trace amounts. Never seriously considered it as a source of toxins (or metals), before, but it is a likely contributor. Buyer beware: use pharmaceutical grade, high quality supplements or skip them, Altogether?

In thinking about the tons of possible ignitors of PD. I was trying to narrow down which may have impacted me the most, what were the worst things I was exposed to, or consumed on a daily basis for about 35 years. It gave me the chills when I started researching about what chemical ingredients are used in making up supplements. Although I'm still on them, I've become a lot more careful.
