UTI recovery time - my mom seems to take longer each time to recover from a UTI (return to baseline). Anyone else see something similar? If so how long?

Repeated UTIs should not be regarded as business as usual. Cranberry juice has been shown to reduce the incidence of UTI. If you choose to go this route get some sugar free cranberry juice concentrate - avoid the sugar laden cranberry cocktail.

For the evidence in favor of cranberry see my writing here:

I’m not sure how old your mom is but my mom had them a lot. And she would be delirious. If they got sort of a hold of her. Some more worse than others. I was thinking I read about an herb or some thing that helps also in addition to cranberries like Park suggested. I mean cranberry juice.Have you ever tried or heard of the Azo pills? I think they make them for UTI prevention. I didn’t know and probably the home wouldn’t have allowed me to give them to my mom anyway. They may be homeopathic which always makes me feel like it’s not enough, but they get good reviews.

Other than that most older people are always dehydrated. So even though it’s inconvenient to have to go to the bathroom at that age or at an older age it really helps if she can drink water. Or cranberry juice. Or both.

I worked with seniors for 12 years. Learned that once people become older we lose our sense to know when we are thirsty.

We told our clients to keep a non-caffeinated drink near them to sip on periodically. Some would say well I hate water. Give them grapes, watermelon, ice pops - you get the picture.

Those are great ideas. Yes they definitely don’t realize how dehydrated they get.My mom liked Ginger ale. So that helped.

Not good for the blood sugar though.

And of course, when all else fails, constant reminders. :-)

Trouble is bacteria can become resistant. Did they actually test the strain of bacteria? Make sure it is the right antibiotic to treat it. Also make sure she is drinking enough water and and not delibrately drinking less to avoid the pain of peeing as that can cause bacteria to linger instead of flushing through. It can often be caused by e.coli so wiping front to back rather than back to front can avoid this.

My husband had 3 uti's in one year. The second one was actually still the first one - never truly cleared up per urologist. It was after the 3rd uti that his primary care doctor said to take 4 tablets of Vitamin C 500 daily. No uti's. Plus, we make sure he drinks plenty of liquids daily.

Doctor did say cranberry juice is effective, however, too much sugar. Could try sugar free but haven't found one that was palatable.

If it is indeed a UTI infection cranberry should help. Antibiotics for infection and probiotics may be needed to restore the flora. Another possibility is to explore pelvic health and tone with a pelvic floor physiotherapist. A route i have recently discovered. Women hold lots of pain and losses in this area. Warmth helps. Sitz baths with Epsom salts too. It all may be due to the whole area be contracted.

I was having a UTI almost every 2-3 months for about a year. I read about D-Mannose helping with this so I bought some on Amazon. MIRACLE!!!! Since taking it daily, I have not had a UTI in months. Apparently whatever is in it goes into your bladder and absorbs the bad bacteria causing the infections. It works for me and there are no downsides. It's a supplement!

Not exactly the answer you may have been looking for, but it is helpful to know which bacteria she is dealing with, E. coli being the most common at 70%+. Since they are recurrent, there is the possibility of biofilm induction which will make it very difficult to fully eradicate the UTI.

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) in liquid and or capsule form is a potent fighter of UTI's and potential biofilms from multiple bacterial and fungal sources including Candida Albicans(CA) in cases of multiple forms of infection at once. It has also shown the ability to fight antibiotic resistant UTI's. In conjunction with a medium dose of a quality sea salt is a potent UTI fighter and adjunctive to antibiotic treatments that are losing effectiveness.
