Low B6 vitamin results

My doctor suggested I do a test for levels of all B vitamins. All were normal except B6 which was low. I do not take any PD medication yet. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for your reply, I read them, quite informative as now I know what type of B6 to take. But it does not apply to me as I am not taking any levodopa medication yet.

Yes, I understand. I figured it would be good information for you to be aware of.

My multivitamin says it contains pyridoxine hydrochloride. ???

That is a form of pyroxidine. As noted this can cause toxicity in sufficient quantity. Ordinary doses of a multivitamin are not likely to cause this problem. On the other hand, if you are taking carbidopa levodopa it may be in order to take additional vitamin B6 in the form of P5P. Alternatively get a better multivitamin or B complex which provides P5P and not pyroxidine for vitamin B6.

Some genetic mutations interfere with various vitamin pathways. Also insufficiencies or over abundance of different bacteria. Or a dietary deficiency.

Vitamin B6 is found in a variety of animal and plant foods. Do you eat enough of these?

Beef liver.

Tuna.

Salmon.

Fortified cereals.

Chickpeas.

Poultry.

Some vegetables and fruits, especially dark leafy greens, bananas, papayas, oranges, and cantaloupe.

My husband had low B6. Dr stated his absorption of B's wasn't good. He ate tuna, salmon, dark leafed veggies and more. Suggested to take Vitamin B complex with Methylfolate.

My humble understanding is that vitamins B2 and B6 are needed to make glutathione which is an important anti-oxidant that is possibly deficient in the cells making dopamine in people with Parkinson's.

In fact, you didn't get an answer to your question. Is there meanwhile clarity on the cause of the B6 being too low at the time?

I assume you immediately took extra B6 vitamin. Given the significance of B6 for dopamine production, you would expect that there should have been a significant improvement in your PD symptoms. Was that indeed the case?

Remarkable, by the way, that your neurologist had your B vitamins tested. 👏 Did another check take place later?
