Lactiplantibacillus (Lactobacillus) plantarum PS128

delboy381 profile image
210 Replies

Before I share briefly my experience with PS128 I want to emphasize that this probiotic may not have the same effect on everyone, as we know we are all different.

For four years I have been looking for something to help me with my symptoms. Many of the supplements I use have not given any specific relief until the probiotic Lactiplantibacillus (Lactobacillus) Plantarum PS128, which I felt the other day.

It is not a placebo to immediately dismiss this dilemma because I know this matter very well. My brief experience with the PS128 is 7 days. I know it's too early for some conclusions about its effectiveness, but I couldn't bear to share this news with you. I won’t write much about probiotics. I will put the website so that you can read it for yourself.

benedbiomed.com/

ps128.info/clinical-pd

I know this probiotic has already been mentioned here, but I want to share my experience with it.

I consume the powder 1.5 gr before meals. Active ingredient ps128 30 billion live bacteria. This is a revolutionary psychobiotic.

What relief did I notice with the symptoms:

A clearer head 80%

Tremor 70%

Anxiety 80%

Fatigue 80%

Motor skills 70%

At the end of the post, a quote I read on this site:

Parkinson’s attacks the mind, body, and spirit. Hope treats all three.

Glad that it is working for you. I gave it to my mother for 7 weeks and it made no difference.

delboy381 profile image
delboy381 in reply to John_morris71

I'm sorry to hear that. Like I said we are all different and the way we developed this unhealthiness. How long has mom had Pd? And what are her main symptoms?

John_morris71 profile image
John_morris71 in reply to delboy381

She has PD since 11 years now. Gave it to her( 60 billion dose/day) almost a year and a half back and did not make a difference. It was from Solace Probiotic, same strain - PS128. (see link below).

She has almost all the typical symptoms associated with PD - constipation - now manageable, balance and gait issues, freezing before walking, anxiety, confusion, fatigue and tremors. But she sleeps well, eats well, can walk for a furlong without stopping if and when she is in the mood - (which is rare).

Hi Millbrook, which kind of product are you using?

Millbrook profile image
Millbrook in reply to Fed1000

Basically I emailed Benedbiomed and asked them for their supplier in Asia.

the website is wellbeingsg.com

Product is called ACTIV health multibiotics containing PS128 +K21

My husband takes 2 sachets according to the clinical trial.

The best thing is to email Benedbiomed, and ask them where you can purchase it. You want the same product. They can name it whatever they like. It is a life changer.

Did it help your husband with Tremors and Dystonia as these are the major symptoms I suffer from predominantly all left sided Very painful Dystonia with my toes, fingers and hand cramping and curling in on themselves and severe tremors in my foot and hand 🙏

Millbrook profile image
Millbrook in reply to OAFC

If you refer to delboy381’s post he said it helped with tremors amongst other things. My husband does not have tremors. He had akinesia-slowness of movt- and balance was a really big thing and he was prone to tripping and falling. So with PS128 his balance was normalised, no more akinesia.

Unlike delboy who cd perceive the difference when taking PS 128, my husband cannot give any feedback. As caregiver I see the improvements.

His driving also improved tremendously, anxiety, sleep all improved as did nocturia

Trailing in reply to JeanieBeanie

Jeanie, I sure wish the L-Plantarum from Swanson was the same as the PS128 probiotic because I have been having a difficult time finding out where I can purchase it. Evidently it is made somewhere in Asia and not available in the U.S. But there are many strains of L-Plantarum. Here is some info I came across:

Lactobacillus plantarum has been isolated from a variety of hosts such as plants, the human gastrointestinal tract, animals such as poultry and insects, as well as a variety of foods such as meat, fish, vegetables, olives and raw or fermented dairy products (2,4).

Lactobacillus plantarum has been used as a starter culture in the fermentation of many foods such as (5,6):

• Yogurt with live and active cultures

• Raw, unpasteurized sauerkraut

• Pickles brined in water and sea salt

• Raw, aged cheese such as Swiss, provolone, Gouda, Cheddar, Edam, Gruyére, and cottage cheese

• Traditionally baked sourdough bread

• Kefir

• Tempeh, or fermented soybeans

There are a diverse array of lactobacillus plantarum strains the history and evolutionary lineage of which is not clear.

Scientist found the PS128 strain in fermented Chinese Mustard Greens. Evidently this is a common culture condiment in Asia . If anyone knows how we can purchase this probiotic (psychobiotic) in the U.S. please let me know. I would be forever grateful.

JeanieBeanie profile image
JeanieBeanie in reply to Trailing

Hi. My husband has tried it now on two separate occasions with no improvement. In fact it affected him adversely but there could have been other factors. He has had PD 28 years though and had DBS so nothing is straight forward.

Trailing profile image
Trailing in reply to JeanieBeanie

Jeanine if your husband used Swanson's brand it is not the same and therefore cannot have the same affect that has been mentioned here. If it contained PS128 in any significant amount it would specify it on the bottle.

What my reply was trying to explain in that there are a diverse array of lactobacillus plantarum strains and they each do different things in the body. The PS128 strain has been patented and is the strain that has been found to help Parkinson's.

I ordered some today at Solace Probiotics for my husband and will let you know if it works for him. It is expensive but they offer 15% off if you sign up for a subscription which you can change or cancel at any time. They also ship free in the U.S. Hope that helps. Wishing you the best.

Curious thing re the French product - looking at the website for Bened, the company developing PS128, they have a world map showing location of manufacturing facilities, and also "Bened product markets" - France is not included in either. Hmm. Also I found an article from a couple of years ago with the headline "EU firm Beopanax selected as exclusive psychobiotic product distributor". But maybe this is out of date?!

So, struggling to find out how to get it to the UK now, without going with the French "Neurobiotique". I think I'll send a quick message to Bened asking on both issues.

Reply copied from Bened:

"..we provided PS128 to Synergia for their product in the past. Currently, we are supplying the strain in the EU to Neuraxpharm (for product Neuraxbiotic Spectrum, sold in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Italy) and Beopanax (for product Second Brain, sold in Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Albania).

Regarding shipping and efficacy, you're right that lack of temperature control can negatively affect a probiotic's potency. The PS128 strain should always be refrigerated when possible. We know that is not always practical during shipping, so each of the products listed above include enough overage (extra PS128 above the amount guaranteed for each dose) for at least that amount left at their expiration date - even considering some shipping time at room temperature. Especially now that outside temperatures are cooler, the CFU count should not be decreased by much before the order reaches you.

Unfortunately, there is not currently a distributor selling a product with PS128 in the UK. In the meantime, I can recommend a few different PS128-containing products:"

- They go on to recommend Solace (US) and Activhealth (Singapore) in addition to the above. I've now bought from the latter, with the special offer, close to use by date sachets. Also asking Bened to check that freezing is unwise (probably) and what the normal shelf life is, so I can see how quickly it degrades.

Robb48 profile image
Robb48 in reply to Robb48

Another reply from Bened:"Under normal refrigeration, PS128's shelf life is at least 2 years. Freezing the product is just fine. Feel free to store them that way if you'd like to keep them even longer."

Nice! So the almost expired products many here are buying can be chucked in the freezer to last for longer.

Love the customer service from these guys too.

Looks interesting, and the price is good (had to look hard to see it is 30 sachets!), unfortunately they dont give a breakdown for the number of PS128 cells vs the two other cultures they have in the sachets. Although PS128 is listed first on the ingredients, so I guess the minimum is 1/3rd. Give the low price I guess just take more :).

I glad to hear that. I don’t want to claim anything about this probiotic, but so far for the first time I feel like something from the supplements is helping me. It boosted my self-confidence. My opinion is that the end of this unhealthiness is getting closer. One part of Michael's interview I recently read:

With the Foundation, which has raised over $1 billion to date for Parkinson's research, "we are loading up all the cannons we can and pointing them at the target," Fox told PEOPLE earlier this week. "One of them will fire and it will happen. The disease is a problem that will be there until you solve it. But we're hopeful."

Hi Delboy,

I wrote a post on PS 128 in June 2021. Within 2 weeks there was 180 degree turnaround affecting balance, stiffness, slowness, driving. Everything was normalised. It was a miracle. My husband takes 2 sachets -60 billion- at bedtime.

He took the probiotic at the same time as doing the coronet duo 2x a day so now we are committed to both.

I am so happy for you that PS 128 accomplished as much as it did for us.

My husband has been taking it since June and continues to take it daily and the improvements have been sustained. You can click on my icon and read my post on PS 128. According to the supplier the product is not affected by temperature unless it is very hot but best to store it in cool and dry place once you receive it.

WinnieThePoo profile image
WinnieThePoo in reply to Millbrook

That seems surprising. All lactobacillus are sensitive to temperature and deteriorate quite quickly. You can probably test viability by making a yoghurt from a sachet. Don't worry what it tastes like, as long as it ferments into yoghurt

Millbrook profile image
Millbrook in reply to WinnieThePoo

Personally I store mine in the fridge though I was told it was not necessary as long as it was a cool place. Heat is more of a problem here. I will try making yoghurt with it and let you know.

Just now hoping for survival in the shipment. Thank you for your contributions to this group, Millbrook.

I notice that with the French sourced version, they suggest storage at between 4 and 7 degrees, preferably in the refrigerator. Seems precise and I wonder if this applies to other versions? Would international shipping affect the efficacy, as storage temperature would be out of control?

Hi Robert.

I have emphasized that we are not all the same and that it may not have the same effect in another, similar to B1. It is not my intention to give false hope to anyone.

We are in a position to look for what will make our life easier and better. All the best.

Millbrook profile image
Millbrook in reply to Robert3

Sorry to hear that Robert. Perhaps you may want to try the coronet Duo that other members are using as well. My husband used coronet duo and PS128 simultaneously. I was inclined to think that the change was due to PS 128 because red light takes time to be effective.

We are not promoting any product and have nothing to gain from it other than helping others get better.

In the clinical trial that ran for 12 weeks 70% of participants experienced improvements and 20 % of the 70% experienced great improvements.

It is worth trying for everyone. It does not cost an arm and a leg at the clearance price and it could very well change your life.

It was life changing for me. Previously I could not leave my husband alone for fear of falls. Now his balance is normal and he can function independently. He is more alert and functions normally in everything. The slowness is gone. It’s a miracle 😭

It could be beneficial.I don't have PD I have Parkinsonisms and I've been taking it for 6 weeks with a lot of other supplements. Had some minor tremor improvements hard to say because of what. But I have stopped now because recently I am experiencing some dizziness (don't know the reason yet) and I'm on regular probiotics.

My probiotics say it contains lactobacillus plantarum (LP-115). Can anyone explain the difference? Thx.

Millbrook profile image

Plantarum has different strains. This is specifically PS 128 in the plantarum family. So all the other strains are different.

RBan profile image
RBan in reply to Millbrook

So this means the other strains aren’t effective?

Millbrook profile image
Millbrook in reply to RBan

Essentially the clinical trials used PS128 to get those results. Taking other strains have no proven track

Also the dose is 60 billion which is 2 sachets daily - 2 boxes a month

However delboy381 only took 1 a day to get results. But Faridaro who took 1 a day had no results

Millbrook in reply to RBan

If you want to try PS 128 now would be a good time as they are clearing stocks that are due to expire Dec 2021. This is the one that my husband is taking. It works out to about £5 for a box of 30 sachets excluding shipping. Best to order maximum amount that the standard shipping allows.

The website is wellbeingsg.com

You would need 2 boxes a month as the clinical trial used 60 billion at bedtime for 12 weeks.

Wishing you all the best

I already take Lactiplantibacillus (Lactobacillus) plantarum as a probiotic supplement by SWANSON:

swansonvitamins.com/swanson...

For all I know, the very inexpensive Swanson L. Plantarum supplement might be partially comprised of the PS 128 strain. In fact, it might even be entirely comprised of PS 128. The label simply does not specify which substrain of L. Plantarum is in the bottle.

JAS9 profile image
JAS9 in reply to Bolt_Upright

Yes, I saw this too. So, you'd take 12 capsules a day?

Cost is about $12/day or about $360/mo!

What if I bought one month's supply of Solace then used some of that to ferment my own PS128? (Instructions on how to make your own probiotics are easily found on the internet.) According to Solace's website, they use fermented mustard greens. The only problem is dosing, but is that really a problem? After all, we're talking about swallowing fermented food (that is quite safe; fermented foods have been around a long time and are generally health-promoting). These fermented foods already have, by definition, bacteria that caused the fermentation. If I'm careful and introduce PS128 into the process I should be able to consume at least a small amount of the fermented mustard greens without any problems. If I get too much of it, my gut might make even more dopamine than somebody getting "just" 60bln CFUs. That wouldn't be terrible. Am I wrong?

It will be interesting to see a longer term report. "Next day" improvements are usually placebo effect, but not always.

"The trials" are far from conclusive (human PD trials - not immodium induced mouse constipation trials)

NCT04722211 - a proper trial, listed Jan 21, 120 participant placebo controlled , still recruiting, due to report end next year

PMC8277995 - open label, 25 participant 12 week duration 2021. Interesting, but needs a trial like NCT04722211 to corroborate

NCT04389762 open label 120 participant 12 week duration COMPLETED June 2020 - no results posted. No results posted 15 months later usually = "didn't work"

NCT03566589 2018 trial - no results posted

The trials are all of PS128 - not the cocktail with K21. So 60 billion cfu of a reputable sourced PS128 - like Synergia Neurobiotique, if kept cool in transit and storage, should be equivalent to the trial.

Forum feedback on this thread seems to be pretty evenly split between "didn't work for me" and "great results"

As I said at the start, it will be interesting to see the results 6 months out

I used to make wines with a group of friends and we started by using prepacked yeast variety's . being slow learners it took about 15 years to smarten up and use a yeast that mother nature developed rather than just any old 'YEAST' and we started to have superbly flavour and body, etc.

Think of that statement about bunch of grapes down in the far corner of the Vinyard that is harvested yearly and has superb flavour and body. far better than the rest of the variety adjacent.

Now, what is one of the factors that is missing from this discussion of a very finely (?rare) refined yeast? (PS218)

If you give up here is the answer: There has been NO discussion of the foods or style of meals/foods ie Vegan, Meat-a-terian, etc.

The inclusion of that information would help others reading "It worked for me" if there is a reasonable chance of success.

Just saying....

I purchased some from Solace in the summer. The first shipment arrived hot (literally hot to touch) and I asked for a replacement. The next batch was a bit warm, but not as bad.

Customer Service said -

"In regards to your concern about Solace being exposed to heat, there was a study conducted examining this very question. When tested at 77 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees above room temperature) for 30 days, 75% of the probiotics survived. When tested at 99 degrees Fahrenheit, for 15 days 50% of the probiotics survived."

I tried one and got a definite effect a few hours later - a flare up of lower back and urogenital pain. Same as what happens if I take Lion's Mane.

So it isn't for me, but FWIW my experience was that even after getting hot it did appear to be active and it did something. I can't speak to PD symptoms since I don't have PD.

The strain was isolated and patented by Professor Tsai Ying-Chieh[13] (National Yang-Ming University) and sold as a supplement ingredient by the company he founded, Bened Biomedical.[14]

In Europe, CNS pharmaceutical company Neuraxpharm, markets a product for autism containing PS128.[15] Synergia sells in the probiotic in France.

Solace and Thryve are brands containing PS128 in North America.

In Malaysia, Nuvanta sells a PS128 product.[16]

Three years ago, started having frozen facial muscles, choking on saliva, Poor lane discipline when driving and slowness. Started vitamin B1 and it improved. Balance was worse this year and we started coronet duo and PS 128 and it has been very good especially his balance and driving. Everything is normal.A visit to neurologist last year for vertigo confirmed that he was slower on one side. His advice was PD has slow progression and not to worry about it and there are meds to help. He said he could not definitively say he had PD or he did not have PD.

Hi All, as you know by now, Bened LIfe bought Solace and has a US patent on lactobacillus plantarum ps128 which they call Neuralli. They are now charging $164 a bottle or $115.50 a bottle if you buy three months worth.

If you're looking to save money and you look elsewhere out of the US, either the product is out of stock or shipping costs make it even more expensive than Neuralli. I have emails out to a pharmacy in Spain where I can't even do a Euros to $ conversion because of the crazy way they've stated the price, but this aside, I can't find any less expensive source. As if we didn't all deal with high enough costs already between supplements and drugs, right?

Because some believe Dopamine is generated in the gut and transported to the brain via vagus

I think the scientific orthodoxy is that dopamine made in the gut can't cross the blood brain barrier, and that would include can't dodge it via the vagus nerve, and that it is a cause of side-effects . Drugs like Carbidopa are used to stop dopamine being metabolised outside the brain.

My wife recently finished her 6th bottle (6th month) of Neuralli.  I was going to come back after three months and post about our experience, but wanted to extend our trial period to provide more thorough feedback.  So now it’s been 6 months and, as promised, I’m back to share our results.

A few details about my wife and I first:

1. My wife was diagnosed with PD 12years ago.  I am her husband and caretaker.

2. Her symptoms from the beginning have been her right side is weaker than her left and she sometimes catches her right foot while walking as a result.  She very occasionally has shaking in her right leg, but typically this only happens when her medication wears off.  She really has no dyskinesia or dystonia to speak of so we’ve been lucky in this regard.  A few years ago she was diagnosed with SIBO and was given two courses of a powerful antibiotic called Xifaxan which got rid of the SIBO, but she still suffered from IBS symptoms like constipation, gas and bloating afterwards.

3. Her main problem now is her response to the levadopa/carbidopa medication.  She has slowly required more pills more often during the day. She was taking about eight 25/100 pills between 7:00AM and 10:00PM and 2 Sinemet CRs at night before bed. A year ago we added amantadine 100mg (1/2 pill, 2x daily)

4. Her symptoms present as fatigue, slowness, stiffness, etc. if her medication dosage is too low and as agitation, overstimulation and unstable walking if it’s too high.  This is referred to typically as LID (Levadopa Induced Dyskinesia), but my wife doesn’t really have much noticeable dyskinesia.

5. Other than levodopa/carbidopa 25/100, amantadine 100mg, and a few basic supplements, my wife doesn’t take anything else for her PD, with one notable exception which I’ll discuss next.

L. plantarum PS128:

“Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 (PS128) is a specific probiotic, known as a psychobiotic, which has been demonstrated to alleviate motor deficits and inhibit neurodegenerative processes in Parkinson's disease (PD)-model mice. We hypothesize that it may also be beneficial to patients with PD based on the possible mechanism via the microbiome-gut-brain axis.”

frontiersin.org/articles/10...

L. plantarum PS128 - published peer-reviewed research - Clinical Studies

benedlife.com/pages/publish...

One last thing I want to clear up for folks in the United States before I share our results.  BenedLife has a patent on L. plantarum PS128 in the US under the brand name Neuralli.  If you’re in the US, you can get L. plantarum PS128 from other countries under other brand names, but by the time you add shipping, the cost will far exceed what you will pay for Neuralli in my experience.  Also, L. plantarum PS128 should ship refrigerated.  That’s not going to happen if shipped internationally. I had to do a lot of research to arrive at this conclusion, but feel free to prove me wrong.  So here’s your source for L. plantarum PS128 in the US: benedlife.com.  Sure wish I’d known this before scouring the internet for hours looking for cheaper foreign sources.

Now to the purpose of this post, our experience with Neuralli aka. L. plantarum PS128:

There is no doubt in our minds that Neuralli is helping my wife in multiple ways.  Btw we have been very strict in our testing by not introducing any new variables or changing her existing protocol in any way.  We apply a scientific rigor and skepticism when we try a new drug, protocol, or supplement.  We chart her progress as we go.  We cannot explain the positive results we are seeing other than the introduction of Neuralli.

Clarity of thought and focus

- The first result we observed after about a month was an improvement in clarity of thought.  My wife takes Neuralli at 7:00AM and 7:00PM every day.  We have definitely seen an improvement in clarity of thought in the mornings, specifically verbal communication and cognition.  We talk about important issues in the morning now and she has a complete understanding, focus and easy communication that used to take much later in the day to achieve.

Calmness

Along with clarity of thought she has experienced a sort of calmness we have not seen in years.  A more stable, peaceful demeanor has developed.  Delboy381 said it about his experience and we agree.  She simply feels more “normal”, as unscientific a statement as this may be.  All I can tell you is.  She’s herself again; best way I can describe it.

IBS Symptoms

The most dramatic effect – and only after month 2 - is that her IBS and constipation symptoms dramatically improved.  She used to take Miralax every night before bed to be able to go to the bathroom the next day.  Now she rarely takes it at all.  Every morning she goes to the bathroom once or twice.  The diarrhea, constipation, gas and bloating have all but disappeared.  None of the dietary changes or drugs she took for SIBO or her IBS previously have worked as well as Neuralli.  And again, we know it’s Neuralli because she hasn’t introduced anything else or made any other changes.

Improvement in overall PD symptoms and medication requirements

There’s has been an overall improvement in her PD symptoms.  I think this comes from the fact that when your gut, and consequently your immune system, starts to heal, you feel better in general.  She now has more energy to exercise due to the healing of her IBS symptoms.  Her motor symptoms – dragging her right foot while walking and occasional stumbling - have improved. This took about 3 months.

The other thing that’s happening is her need for medication has been decreasing.  At first, we didn’t see a pattern in her daily medication requirements, but now we see in the morning, when she used to immediately require Sinemet upon waking at 5:30AM, she can now sleep until about 7:00 without any medication until she takes her first Neuralli with Sinemet at 7:00AM.  This alone is remarkable.

Also, she takes Sinemet about every 2 hours during the day, but now we’ve been able to cut her pills in halves and quarters and give her less medication as a result.  We’ve seen a change of .25 of a pill here, another .50 of a pill there at various times throughout the day, and yet she has the same or more energy. We’re down to about 6 25/100 pills on average a day now. These findings are very promising considering her trajectory was more pills, not less.

Conclusion

This is where we are after Month 6 and counting.  We are so used to disappointment that we hardly ever use the word improvement anymore, but factually documented improvement unaffected by any other variable other than Neuralli is taking place.  I have no idea what you will experience, but if you ask me if Neuralli is worth a try, I would say yes for sure, especially compared to all the other nasty drug alternatives out there.  Hope this review was helpful.  Any questions, please let me know.

Found this recommendation in the thread.... beopanax.com/sr/proizvod/se...

I am just ordering 3 boxes for now. Cost RSD 8,940.00 (Serbia) works out to around £65 for 3 boxes of 30 caps. Its a Serbian website so had to do Google translate.
