basic research news: skull bone marrow makes special immune cells for the brain

"In a variation on the theme of the brain as immune-privileged, the

central nervous system may have access to tailor-made immune cells. This

is according to two new studies, one led by Jonathan Kipnis and the

other by Marco Colonna, both at Washington University in St. Louis, and

published June 3 in Science. While other organs make do with immune

cells circulating in the blood, the meninges taps its own private stock

of monocytes and B cells in the nearby skull and vertebrae bone marrow.

By way of tiny vascular corridors in the bone, these cells travel

directly to the meninges, where they reside until provoked by injury or

inflammatory insult, whereupon they infiltrate the brain or spinal cord.

These myeloid cells never set foot in the blood and are distinct from

their counterparts circulating there. The researchers propose that these

directly sourced immune cells become CNS specialists, imbued with the

intricate knowledge of how to protect the brain."

Thanks for sharing. Is photobiomodulation available in the United states?Would light therapy from an infrared sauna B

Helpful?

There's a photobiomodulation trial in the US someone posted on a few weeks ago; it is not the type of photobiomodulation that I was referring to in my post, however -

I was wondering about the mechanism of devices applied on the head, like the 'bucket hat' / coronet with red or near infrared lights - there are trials on in Australia and I have seen posts where people have written about mail ordering these devices.

You can get all kinds of LED devices in the US, but not approved or marketed for PD. You can get, for example, devices designed & approved for hair growth - what they will do for other things, who knows. They might affect the skull bone marrow since it seems like the light could penetrate that far.

Sauna bathing could possibly be beneficial - but I'm not aware of any trials for PD, unfortunately. It might not be safe for people with autonomic dysfunction (could overheat).

Here's Rhonda Patrick's article on health effects of sauna:

I should have linked you to the post on the VieLight for photobiomodulation; this reply from Millbrook is interesting : healthunlocked.com/cure-par...
