What Are the Four Types of Vitamin B12?

While known commonly as ‘Vitamin B12’ it does, in fact, exist in four very similar chemical forms, namely:

Methylcobalamin

Adenosylcobalamin

Cyanocobalamin

Hydroxocobalamin

Vitamin B 12 [adenosylcobalamin] modulates Parkinson's disease LRRK2 kinase activity through allosteric regulation and confers neuroprotection

Abstract

Missense mutations in Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2) cause the majority of familial and some sporadic forms of Parkinson's disease (PD). The hyperactivity of LRRK2 kinase induced by the pathogenic mutations underlies neurotoxicity, promoting the development of LRRK2 kinase inhibitors as therapeutics. ... Treatment with AdoCbl inhibits LRRK2 kinase activity in cultured cells and brain tissue, and prevents neurotoxicity in cultured primary rodent neurons as well as in transgenic C. elegans and D. melanogaster expressing LRRK2 disease variants. Finally, AdoCbl alleviates deficits in dopamine release sustainability caused by LRRK2 disease variants in mouse models.

There is reason to think that LRRK2 inhibition will help people with idiopathic PD as well as those with the LRRK2 mutation:

In the case of the study of vitamin B12 and Covid 19:

"Our study observed that vitamin B12 levels increased as a clinical course of the patients worsened"

So the B12 levels may be an effect rather than a cause.

It could be due to liver injury since that can cause release of stored B12. (edit: I had written that severe liver injury has been reported as a result of covid, but not that common - but maybe it is, depending on the population)

Another possibility is that some other aspect of the disease process affects the accuracy of the B12 test itself.

I'm thinking of getting the Seeking Health B minus product; does it currently contain MCT oil? It is not listed on their website but an old Q&A (2017) on Amazon says it does.

Am debating B12 forms. Greger and McDougall are at it again (before it was about glycoalkyloids in white potatoes - me and my daughter are both now allergic to them so that's a moot issue for us). Now they are into it over cyanocobalamin vs methyl B12. The possibility of harmful analogues when methyl B12 is combined with thiamine does concern me since my daughter is so fatigued all the time & why not try something else since what we are doing is obviously not working.

My bottle of Seeking Health B minus says nothing about MCT Oil. Any event it is a smallish capsule which would not have room for much.

I am unaware of the dispute about vitamin B12. Based on the foregoing I am not about to take Greger's word for anything.

Thanks for the info.

I tend to agree with Dr Greger on most things (and you know what I think about uric acid), except for fish consumption and I guess the general idea that there aren't any valuable nutrients in animal products (e.g. taurine, carnosine).

The point of my comment is that, yes, vitamin B 12 is beneficial, particularly the adenosylcobalamin form.

Hi Kia! Good to "see" you again. :)

My husband takes Tricobalamin, three forms of B12 (one of them Adenosylcobalamin) by Designs for Health. I believe B12 and liposomal Glutathione keep his energy level higher than mine. :)

Adenosycobalamin works as a jump start in mitochondria that is why it helps producing more energy.

The current issue of Life Extension magazine covers this topic:

"New in-vitro research shows that adenosylcobalamin can protect neurons and prevent a decline in levels of the critical neurotransmitter, dopamine."

Well, that's in-vitro (mice and worms). I don't see evidence that oral dosing gets it done in humans, but have started on a sublingual mix of methylcobalamin & adenosylcobalamin.
