I had a bad experience with this supplement. Horrible stomach pains after only one dose and I did not feel right for days afterward. I subsequently read not to take with levodopa. Don't know if Mucuna falls into that; C/L does. When I mentioned to my neurologist, he said very little is known about how 5-HTP works, but not to take if it didn't do anything for me.

George has been taking 5-htp every time he takes mucuna, which is 5 times a day. He's never had a problem with it. Go and look at the Marty Hinz protocol. That's where we started. I think taking any supplement that is natural, and your body recognizes, is much preferable to bringing foreign chemicals into your body.

Thank you! I will check out dr. Hinz. What brand and strength mucuna does George take?

Every one is different. He started on natural therapies when he was first diagnosed, years ago. The only residual indication he has PD is a tremor on one side. He also takes B1, which I think helps. We will be trying the nano-zeolite as soon as our doctor receives the shipment he ordered.

George takes Barlowe's Herbs mucuna 600 mg. 40% L-Dopa. As was reported on a previous post, because it is made from plants, the crop can vary , but we have been happy with the results.

My husband started the 5HTP by Solgar 100mg before bed about two weeks ago. We ordered it from Amazon. He also takes Nature Bell Mucuna 500 mg in pill form one in the morning and one in the afternoon for a total of 1000 mg per day. The Mucuna was ordered from Amazon as well.

Yes, he says he is sleeping better.

5-HTP turns to Seretonin and that Seretonin can reduce the Dopamine.

Even SSRIs must be taken carefully if someone taking Levodopa.

I wouldn’t suggest 5-HTP to boost mood if someone taking Levodopa or Mucuna.

it's just that you will never be able to balance everything, but you can try. Better a walk to relax or a game of cards with friends r yoga .

The Balancing Act is not as good as it used to be! Walking on trails is my favorite thing to do. How long I'll be able to do it is what frightens me! I'd like to say I'm too young for this shit but then the joke would be on me?

you are not the only one and there are those who are worse off. So my pharmacist has been saying for more than five years, he also says he finds me in good health😂😂😂

Steve, are you exposed to a lot of EMFs, my husband and I suffered health issues from being exposed to non-ionizing radiation from a 'Smart' electrical meter. When our house was remodeled our electric was upgraded and they installed a 'Smart' digital electric meter right outside our bedroom window within 3 feet of our bed. For six years our health went down before we made the connection. One should never be within 10 feet of these meters. Unfortunately for the last three of those six years my husband was also installing WiFi at work. So he was being bombarded day and night for three years with microwave radiation and dirty electric. I noticed first that my husband was aging faster than me. We went to all sorts of doctors and they could not find any reason for his fatigue. My symptoms were total body hives and angiodema the episodes of which got worse and closer together till they became chronic and I could not get off medication. After we got the 'Smart' meter replaced with a mechanical analog meter I was able to get of meds and my hives and angiodema are gone and have not returned. My husband was not so fortunate and now has Parkinson's. When we discovered the health issues that can be caused by exposure to wireless my husband immediately turned of our WiFi. We also have added filters to our electric to eliminate dirty electric. We have all become addicted to this wireless technology. Our children are being exposed to 100 MILLION times more EMFs than our grandparents were. Fiber optics and wired all the way is safer and more secure. The FCC allowed tax payers money that was set aside for fiber optics to be used by the telecom corporations to install wireless. To learn more go to ehtrust.org. My husband has been taking Mucuna and just recently started using a Vielight X-Plus. It cost around $700 and comes with a 6 month return policy. You have 6 months to try it and can get 80% of its value back. We also used the coupon 'healing 4 me' offered elsewhere on this blog. We are both 75. Our exposure to the 'Smart' meter started in 2012. Before then we were both healthy and on no medications. We have been eating organic for over 20 years. It is the accumulation of toxins that put a toll on our immune systems and makes us susceptible. We both have used zeolite in the past from Zeo Health to detox from heavy metals.

When you're iodine deficient, your susceptibility to EMF increases. I don't know how your thyroid is functioning but it may be a good idea to try supplementing iodine, such as Lugol's along with selenium.

Why do you want to take 5-HTP? What effect are you hoping that it has?

I did a small amount of research on this supplement about a month ago, and I saw enough to convince me not to take it.

1) As someone else noted, it can cause adverse reactions, including nausea, when taken with carbidopa-levodopa.

2) I think I recall other possible adverse side effects.

I didn't see the benefit. But there was clearly risk.

Thanks for your feedback. I can't tell you that the few days I was using it the mucuna that I take was not working as well not even close!

It may be tough to find the delicate balance. I'm aware you're trying 5-HTP with Sharon's recommendation, but her stance was that 5-HTP balances out and suppresses the neurotoxic effect of large quantities l-dopa. 5-HTP actually increases the production of serotonin, but it may also counter dopamine and norepinephrine. I'm not sure what dosage you're on, but I suggest you either cut the dosage way back or adjust the supplement depending on what you're trying to achieve - such as maintaining sleep, mood enhancement, etc.
