Restarting after a couple of years out

Hello all, I first did c25k 7 years ago at the age of 57, and enjoyed 4 years of running before developing a serious illness requiring prolonged treatment. I now feel ready to start running again, and did d1 of w1 today. I enjoyed the feeling and hope I can build back up to running 5k. I wonder if there's anyone still posting here who was also posting around 2016?

Hi Joy,

Lovely to hear that you are back re-doing c25k and up and running. Sorry to hear you have been struggling with your health and hope you are feeling much better now.

Remember me? 🤦‍♀️ Still here, currently resting a crocked knee.

Good luck, you know you can do it.

🏃‍♀️🤞xxx

Congratulations to you Joy57 on restarting C25K with run 1 of week 1 after not running for about 3 or 4 years, I am not sure if there was anyone here on the forum who were posting in 2016, perhaps Oldfloss, IrishJohn or Irishprincess.??!!

Hello Joy 👋 I remember you and it’s lovely to see you back here again. I’m sorry you had a serious illness but it’s great that you’re starting to run once more.

I’m still running and tend to hang out in one of the other forums these days but I do read the Daily Digest and recognised your name!

Good luck and keep posting, I’ll watch out for your updates 🙂

Hi Joy, how lovely to see you back here again, not sure if you remember me but I ‘follow ‘ you so got an alert about your post. 😀 So sorry to hear that you have had health issues but glad you feel able to start running again. Very well done for completing Run 1 - wonderful 👍😊

I am still plodding along and even managed a HM in 2021! Trying to improve my fitness at the moment because the last 6 months have been rather tough. I haven’t been able to run regularly and some weeks not at all. Wishing you all the very best with your return to running. Keep posting 😊

Yes I do remember you, we were supportive of each other back then! Well done on your HM! I have been walking regularly but its not the same as running is it? I must say, I got the old buzz again even from doing w1r1 so I really hope that I can keep it going! x

Yes. Sorry to read you've been ill. I hope you're fully on the recovery now. C25k is a great start back and you've done it before.I snapped my ACL in my left knee just before covid but although I've had consultations I've not had a repair offered yet. So I've been excercising it to strengthen it. Finally I started c25k again and am on d3 of w1 after a couple of false starts due to covid and colds that were worse than COVID.

At 71 I guess being able to keep at it is good.

All the best

Great. I'll do d3 w1 tonight. Then D1 w2 tomorrow to get me back on the right day.. good luck

Thanks. It's best to have a rest day between runs though, however tempting it is to go out again the next day. I did d2w1 today, a lovely sunny afternoon. Goodness, I've missed running!

I'd strongly recommend not running on consecutive days at this point.

Your body needs to repair and build between sessions, and it can't do that if you don't give it enough time to do so.

It's those little muscle tears that happen on the run which are repaired when you're resting that lead to your muscles getting stronger. However, if the repair doesn't have enough time to happen you still have those little tears and the next session will make them worse. Do this too often and injury can result.

This is why it's recommended always to have rest day(s) between runs until you've been running regularly for at least six months, possibly longer.

A huge welcome back Joy57! 👏👏🏃‍♀️I often wondered how you were keeping. It’s so great to see you here again and I’m sure you can get to 5k and further in no time. The main thing is your back with us all yippee!😂

I used to be Peggy59….however I got older and changed my name😂😂
