I’m running again. Yeah! This was my first run since my ankle twinged at 25 mins into my first post-graduation run (8 days ago).
So the diagnosis was that I had a very tight flexor hallucis tendon (runs past the inside ankle bone and under the foot). The pain triggered just after I ran up a short slope and it happened as I pushed hard off my big toe. My physiotherapist advised icing, stretching, walking to keep mobile (as long as no pain), lots of foot massage using massage ball and then gradually back to running.
In the last 8 days I have discovered a whole world of foot exercises and the joys of chair cardio to keep weight off my feet but still exercise. I also bought some toe separators, great to help build strength in your foot muscles. I’ve been foam rolling my calf muscles and doing more daily stretching. Not sure if I’m out of the woods yet but I managed a 30 minute run today albeit at the slowest pace I have ever run, more like walking pace. I will have to gradually build back pace as I don’t want to stress my ankle again. Anyway, happy to be back on track.
