Today was a bit of a struggle. Week 3 Run 2 and it was the first run when I felt wheezy. Woke up a bit tight chested and bunged up π so popped a bit of good old Vicks Vapour Rub on and had a blast on the Ventolin inhaler before heading out to get my joggle on. Managed to get through it and by the end had freed up the old chesticle! Sometimes I forget I'm asthmatic and then it rears its ugly head again in the cold damp weather. Any advice on running with Asthma gratefully received!

WEEK 3 RUN 2 - ASTHMA ARRIVAL
Exercise induced asthma is a known issue,
If you do a search for asthma and running you will find a wealth of posts about the subject from this forum.
Well done by the way.
Thanks Ian, I've had it since I was a child (over 40 years now) and use Seretide inhalers daily as a preventative which keeps it under control and a very rarely get a flare up. I exercise quite a lot indoors but I think it's the colder, damp weather now whilst trying to run outside that's caused it today. I'll hit up the Forums and 'Google' and see whether there are any secrets. π
Good morning! There are a few of us asthmatic runners on the forums. My advice is have a puff of ventolin about 5mins before leaving the house and wear a buff around your mouth and nose to warm the air up before you breathe it in. I tend to get quite wheezy, but this little regime has meant I wouldnβt really know I had asthma when Iβm running. I got my buff for about Β£3 in Aldi so no need to break the bank. Good luck with C25k and happy runnings ππ»ββοΈ
Ah brilliant - thanks for that advice, I've got a snood that I wear dog walking in the cold weather on the Moor so will give that a go on Thursday! I'll look like I'm off to rob a bank ha ha! I have my Seretide inhaler when I wake up every day so will add a puff of Ventolin at the same time on 'running' days as I tend to get up, lace up and go running straight away in the mornings! I seem to know how my chest will 'act' as soon as I get up so I did the ventolin before I went today to help, which I think it did. π
I tend to have similar understanding of when my asthma will act up, so a puff of ventolin before leaving the house alongside your other treatment sounds like a good idea. Always make sure you take your ventolin rescue inhaler on your runs, you never know when you might need it π¬! If the cold damp weather is triggering your asthma be sure to contact your asthma nurse to review your action plan. So glad youβre enjoying your running! ππ»ββοΈ
I have asthma, started when I was 60 - I also have a puff of Ventolin before I set off and take it with me in case I get into trouble. Just got to week 7. Lost a few weeks when I caught a cold and couldn't run and breath together. Its a different experience running outside I would recommend you keep trying its worth it. Good luck Colin.
Good morning MoorFit, I also have asthma. I was on high dose steroids, 200/6 Fostair 4 puffs daily as well as montelucast and spiriva respimat. At first I used ventolin before a run too but I no longer need to do this. I've worked with my asthma nurse from the start. I'm no longer using montelucast and my fostair is down to 3 puffs 100/6 and 1 puff 200/6! My advice would be...speak to your asthma nurse, slow down and enjoy. I graduated in July (30 mins running) at that point I could only manage 3k in the 30 minutes. I can now run for 50 minutes doing 5k in just over 44 minutes. I'm 53 soon and have never run before. Good luck π
Wow that's fantastic! Well done on your achievements! Such great distance and pace.
I've got my annual review next month so will have a chat with the nurse...that is if I get an appointment π Asthma so much better this past 5 or so years and so never really had a flare up. I do a lot of indoor exercise and walking so it was a bit of a surprise.
Thanks for your advice
