My first 15K Woohoo!!

Six of us from our running group had decided to aim for a 15K run today (one has done it quite a few times already). Probably one of the most stupid decisions we have made given the temperature today. Our plan was to be flexible on distance just in case.

With the little ones dropped off at school we got going on our warm up walk. It was 18 degrees already so we were defiantly warming up! With a bottle of water in each hand we set off on the run. The first couple of K were in full sun but then into shaded paths which made it much more pleasant (well maybe just less unpleasant!!). After another couple of K I think I was getting used to the heat as it didn't seem as bad.

A slow plod down the rough footpaths and back onto pavements for a short while (and full sun) then back the way we came. I had taken the advice to drink a bit out of each bottle as I went so both were the same weight although once half empty I think the sloshing around was more off putting.

When we finally emerged back onto the pavement for the final couple of K I was not sure I was going to make it, the heat was really hitting me hard. Luckily a few encouraging remarks from the others (who were probably in the same state as me) kept me going.

We got to the end and I am sorry to say there was no brisk walk back, it was a slow stroll with plenty of drinks!!

We all had to force ourselves to do some stretching as all we wanted to do was collapse. I still had a 20 minute walk home to do yet!! We had a bit of a chat then headed in our separate directions.

We were not going to put up a challenge to Mo Farah as it took us well over 2 hours to complete it. I do find running that slow awkward and like to run a bit faster but would never make the distance if I did.

I don't think I have ever enjoyed a shower more than the one I had when I got home.

After a bite to eat and a few jobs I was back on my way to pick up the little ones again. I think the walk did me goo as I was beginning to feel a bit stiff before I left but feel OK now.

I think next time I attempt 15K it will be in cooler weather.

Wow huge congratulations 👏👏👏That was tough for your first time doing that distance in this heat!

But so rewarding.. I hope you are resting up now and feeling very pleased on your achievement today.. 🌟🏃‍♀️🥇

I think if I do that again I will wait for cooler weather. I do 10K usually once a week (when it has been cooler) and don't feel any different to when I do 5K. I have been doing the odd run that is a bit longer (probably 12K) and again felt OK. That bit extra, plus the heat really took it out of me and I was asleep by 9 PM and the alarm woke me up from a deep sleep this morning. I skipped running today, first time in ages.

Congratulations! Especially in this heat👏👏👏Personally, I love long, slow running. That's where all the good stuff happens to your body. 👍
