Hi all. I have just joined & I am on week 5 run 3 but only managed 10 mins running walked 1 min and half ran for 3 walked 2 mins ran 2 mins then just walked, so was very messy - I just got too hot & the sweat was pouring off of me! Probably didnt help that I had 3 glasses of red wine last night. I am running indoors on the treadmill. Would it be harder or easier to street run? Advice much appreciated thank you
Treadmill or Street?: Hi all. I have just joined... - Couch to 5K
Treadmill or Street?
Dreadmills are awful. You get too sweaty. The sweat doesn’t evaporate like outside. It’s boring. You go slower for the same effort. Running outside may take you a couple of runs to get used to. But it’s more interesting, easier and you can vary your routes. Bike paths are good. And trail running is brilliant 😊
Replace the wine with water LadyChesney and get yourself outdoors, it's soooooo much more than a treadmill run! And think of that electricity saving 🤓
Outside!, and yes the wine probably didn't help 🍷🍷🍷
Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.
If you have a high boredom threshold then a treadmill makes a lot of sense, especially at this time of year, but in my opinion being out in fresh air is what running is really about.
Treadmills pace you, whereas outdoors you have to do that yourself, as well having to deal with weather, gradients, uneven ground and an ever changing environment.
If you are struggling, indoors or out, then you need to slow down.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.
Enjoy your journey.
Street every time LC, the wine probably didn’t help (nice though). I wouldn’t say easier, but being out in the fresh air is a lot better and it’s nice to actually feel the distance you’ve ran. 👍🏃♀️
I'm more than happy on my treadmill.
Probably 4 glasses would have been better. Erm possibly not. And if the weather is ok next week (it might be icy!), so I might not go) then do go outside. Give it a whirl and see how it goes. Hydration is important and alcohol is a diuretic, so careful on the booze before a run. Although made from grapes, it is not part of your five a day, more's the pity.
Saying the complete opposite to Tasha99 and others:
TREADmills are great - I love them and am dearly missing the opportunity to run on one with my works gym and local gym both closed. YES, indoor endurance sport can be boring but it's easy to alleviate: podcasts, TV, etc
Sweaty? Yes, so prepare for it... wear as little as possible, vest not t-shirt. Have water ready to drink and towel/tissue to wipe away sweat.
Easy, peasy
