Feeling disheartened. . .

Hey, I haven't posted for a while but thought I'd check in.

I started couch to 5k back in November last year and completed it beginning of Jan (YAY GO ME). I was running fine apart from a bit of knee pain halfway through the program. That is up until about 3/4 weeks ago. I then started to get ankle pain. I have always done my warm up and warm down and I also do yoga and more recently ankle strengthening exercises. I also upgraded my trainers incase in was that. Fast forward to last Tuesday I then started getting fluid on my ankles almost the size of a tennis ball and bruising to the inside. I was icing them and having salt baths. Eventually I contacted my GP who said it was due to repetitive strain injury. I have been given physio and advised to rest them for 1-2 weeks.

The only 2 things I can think of that may have contributed to this is the change from trail running to road running and I also did a 5k run in the snow last weekend.

I am feeling so disheartened and I just wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar or if any one has any words of wisdom.

Hope everyone is doing ok, happy running to you all ❤❤❤

Hi I can’t say I have had any recent ankle problems; however having reached the end of week 4 from a position of never running, the tips on the app have been great. Particularly landing on the ball of your foot and aiming to land your feet immediately below your hips. I have long standing knee issues due to martial arts and football yet with c25K so far so good.

Hope you feel better soon and get some help or advice.

Unfortunately the advice on landing on the ball of your foot is not on the app or podcasts but on this forum. (see the post below)

Hi, thank you! Yes I agree the app is brilliant. I'm just so gutted, I have come so far 😢

Hi, don't be downhearted you have just over done it. I see that a couple of weeks ago you noticed knee and ankle pain. Maybe you need to listen to your body. Pain= rest days. I am sure that pacing yourself will make a difference.

Hi, thank you 😘 I think that is when the pain started... I think it has been just over doing it. I jumped from running 30 mins to 5k (38 mins) pretty quickly however I do still leave a day in-between runs - hopefully I'll be back fighting fit after resting for a week or so. Running was my escape so it has been really hard not being able to ☹️

Hi, I don’t know whether this will help but I got some ankle supports (breathable neoprene sleeves) from Amazon after I started running. I have an old ankle break and it always swells up if I’m doing anything. I found my ankles felt quite weak when running. These supports are brilliant, you feel really supported and my ankles have never swelled up since.Good luck!
