Odd run today, dodgy calf muscles, but longest distance so far.....how does that happen?

I fancied setting myself up to 'Graduate' this weekend, and set off on WK9 R2 this afternoon after rushing back home after work. I'd conducted a Building Survey this morning which saw me on my feet for about three hours, before a swift change into my running gear and off I went. I've had no real issues fitness wise over the whole programme yet today, five minutes in, both calf muscles felt as if they were going to pop. They seemed on the verge of cramping up, so I slowed right down and got into a steady rhythm. That said, I am always slow....so me slowing down means 'very slow'. They took about another five minutes to settle after which I only felt a slight twinge in them both whilst going up quite a steep incline. Last 20 minutes felt nothing from them at all, and at the end of the run, had managed to go around 30 metres further than ever before.

Anyone know what happened to them, and why did the slowing down mean I actually ran further than before? Very odd....

Well done on graduating this weekend!!! The calves? well you clearly did the right thing in slowing down! I guess you must have been going faster to start with to cover the longer distance. Are you using strava or a similar app on your phone to measure your runs? Perception (or at least my personal perception) of how fast or slow I am running is rarely accurate 😂. Listen to the calves, and respond accordingly as you did on this run - that's the way to avoid injury 😊
