Week 5 and aerobic effect versus coronavirus

I did week 4 and just started week 5. My Garmin states my effort was aerobically impacting. As I am 70+ should I carry on and maybe put a strain on my body or just walk longer distances to get the exercise. Anyone know what effect exercise has on the immune system. I presume it would be good but do not want to reduce my immune system.

Running at an effort level that is high inevitably stresses the body and can temporarily reduce the immune system. This has been identified in marathon runners but it is a short lived effect and in general exercise boosts the immune system.

Running also improves your heart and lung function, so in the case of this virus, you will be better equipped to cope with it.

If you stick to doing C25k at the recommended easy conversational pace (see the guide to the plan) then the overall effect will be positive.

That said, if you are unwell, it is unwise to run as that is added stress to the body and can exacerbate the condition.

Keep fit, keep well.

Thank you for this very prompt reply. No excuse now!

I'm not sure I would trust what Garmin says. I went hell for leather on Monday with W3R1, recorded my fastest time for a kilometre and Garmin said it was only a 3.3 on aerobic impact. Felt more like a 4.9 to me. LOL.

I have no idea and feel like that’s a question for someone with medical qualifications!
