Week 5 - 20 minute run

My lower back hurts when I do this, which it didn't before when I was doing the shorter runs. I've now done this session 3 times. I had completed all the runs leading up to this. I have a bit of a history of lower back problems. Any advice?

I’d recommend going to see a sports physio if you can afford it. They could look at your gait, and as you have a history see if you’re running style is contributing to this, or you need to do some back exercises to strengthen?

In the meantime you could try this low impact style of running - the Japanese slow jogging technique designed to avoid injury.

It’s a soft landing with midfoot strike, short stride, and gentle pace. It took me a few watches to catch it all. I run this way all the time and absolutely love it. I can now run for over an hour thanks to this running style. And have had no pain or anything, but am stronger, trimmer and fitter than I’ve been in years. Hope this helps you as much as it has me!
