I recommend you repeat this run rather than move on, but slow right down. Duration is more important than speed, and you can work on your pace later. I’m a recent graduate and am still running slowly and will continue to for sometime. I found if I started too fast I’d get very puffed out and struggled to find my groove. But accepting there is no such thing as too slow (as long as you’re not lying down!) you’ll find you can focus on finishing and duration. My brisk walking is much faster than my running, so that was a trick I had to master - going from a fast walk to a slow run. W5 steps things up a bit with the duration - so take as much time with w4 as you need.

Good luck!

When you repeat the run...head out slower and steadier... try to relax and just go gently.

Well done getting out there again... don’t let it worry you... slow and steady next time out. Today’s run made you stronger and fitter... every run has a purpose.

Hi again,

I just had my first experience of not being able to complete a run & I thought I’d come back to you and see if the reason chimed with you.

I’m away at the moment so doing my consolidation runs without my usual routines. I normally run in the morning after two big buckets of tea! Hard to do that where I am so I ran after a coffee. And I couldn’t finish the last five minutes - I think I was dehydrated and just ran out of juice! Could that have been what happened to you?

Hope you’re back on track!

Funny you should mention coffee as I've cut out caffeine in the morning before training and it seems to be making a big difference in heart rate and overall endurance. Not running at the moment as have had bad calf muscle pain so I'm strength training by power walking at 7kph on a 12% incline for 30 mins Followed by a lengthy swim. I'm just trying to keep progressing in fitness as have a long time to achieve my goal of completing our local 10k in September 🙂

Hi there - sorry for the delay I've been away. I do run after a lot of caffeine but from tea - which seems to act differently than coffee caffeine on me. I thought the issue was about how much liquid I'd drunk before the run - normally I'd have had over a litre of liquid (in tea form). I do wait to pee that out before going! But maybe the other factor with the coffee was its effects on my heart and my stamina?

Sorry about the calf pain, but it seems you've got a really good alternative going so you should be able to get back into the running when you're better. I'm still a very recent graduate, doing my consolidation runs, and I am still running slowly, and will only start working on pace in about 4 to 6 weeks. So maybe when you feel right you could start running but slowly (my brisk walk is *much* faster than my running!)

Best of luck.

You can do it. Don’t worry about the repeat: it’s not a failure. Always remember the First Rule of C25k: The only run you fail is the run you don’t go for ! Take it steady and you’ll nail it next time x
