Hard or soft surface?
I prefer to run on running tracks at public schools and universities however my friend prefers the treadmill at the university. I like the track because it has some spring/bounce in the surface and I feel it reduces impact especially while I am a beginner but look forward to getting into the countryside soon. However I suppose you just have to run where you can for practical purposes and take it slow and easy as you build muscle and strength in your joints and bones. I think what is most important is convenience which will help you stay with the program.
I always thought grass would give a softer run that tarmac but I find running on pavements or roads easier. One explanation is grass is very uneven so your feet land at lots of different angles and you have to build extra flexibility and strength into your feet and ankles. I guess a running track is perfectly flat like a treadmill so will be easier but you may wish to develop the muscles for a future of off road running. I start on a road and finish on grass 😊
It's really what works for you and your body. Trails are softer but uneven surfaces are harder on your ankles.
Make sure you have appropriate shoes for whichever you choose. Road shoes are not great on wet grass or muddy inclines. The most important thing is to stay upright and have fun! 👍😁
