Advice for mum

Hi all,

The former DoYouRemember21 here! Still happily plodding on, do about 1 x 10K a week at around the 1hr mark and then two other runs that vary between 4-8K.

I've also started running with my mum who has recently graduated the programme, however, she is having a bit of trouble with her knees 'locking'. I know from you fine lot that running on aches or discomfort is okay, but running in pain should be avoided. She says after a while, they unlock, but only if they keep going. I advised her to start doing the strength and flex programme - will this help? Anyone else have any tips?

Morning DYR21.....glad the running is going well, and welcome Victoria.

You are right, never run with pain.... you would need to get medical input for advice, daignosis and treatment.

But it does sound as though a bit more warm up might help. I do a top to toe joints warm up pre run. Get the joints working and warmed, particularly if you running first thing in the day. Knees and hips particularly.

Happy running both.

We're running in the evening. I've sort of always subscribed to the advice to not do stretches before a run, only after? But we still do the brisk 5 minute warm-up too.

Unfortunately she is a nurse so getting her to go to the doctor is notoriously difficult 🤣 but I will try

Not streches..... although dynamic stretches pre run are fine if its your thing. More a getting the joint mobile , leg swings , circles with the ankles etc.

Hey Victoria, good to see a post from you :)

Does she take anything for her joints? I take a 1000mg cod liver capsule every day, which has helped my joints. I used to have a clicky hip, but it's fine now.......

She does not, but I'll recommend it! Thanks =)
