So I started running when the clocks changed to British Summer Time. Today is Midsummers Day.
Due to run 40 mins in my “increase by 10%” running plan. Jancanrun’s Dad Dancing playlist on shuffle.
First 5 mins the gremlins had me. I came close to quitting a few times, which was unsettling to say the least.
Got to half way and I ran 2.45k in 20 mins.
Now do I carry on to 2.5k and make this a 5k run? I know I run the second half slower, I’ve never run 40 mins before, I don’t know how much longer it will take me outbound, and it will add even more at the other end of the run.
My sensible head says turn now. Do 5k next week. Back I run.
Second half uneventful. I became increasingly tired and found the fairly shallow slopes on my route harder and harder. 40 mins comes and I haven’t reached my start point.
Again, do I continue or call it job done? I decide to continue.
I glance at my watch. 4.85k. 150m to 5k? Can I do this?
Yes, I bloody can. On I run until my watch buzzes 5k. 43”15’, average pace 8”36’/k.
Absolutely over the moon. I was right that it would take me a 44 min run to do it, and according to my plan I should’ve stopped. But I’m so glad I didn’t!
“Crossed the line” to the sound of Greased Lightning!!
Whatever run you have next, enjoy it x

Great work Jay, 5K is brilliant! For what it's worth, I'd (probably) have kept going too in the circumstances. Now you've done 5K there'll be no stopping you!
Excellent! Mine's completely flat but my son and I are going to try another one close by in the summer holidays where the first km is all uphill - should be fun
Well done Jay! That’s a fantastic achievement! You’ve been building up to this for a while it’s great how you’ve done it so sensibly - building up over time. It does inspire me to do the same too. I’m planning a full 3 weeks of consolidation runs when I graduate before even thinking about doing more.
I just checked that and it just says No Data! So obviously haven’t filled it in. I’ll see if entering data makes a difference - trouble is...i don’t know my weight -haven’t stepped on a scale for years! Maybe my runkeeper app is just giving me an average suggested reading.
You'll see the calorie burns decrease a bit Jay as the weight continues to come off. How much you weigh and how tall you are are huge factors. I'm a shortie so don't burn much at all however hard I work
Hang on a minute! I just noticed something! You started your run at 6.42am. Is this your way of celebrating the summer solstice and embracing your inner Druid ?
Well done Jay. I was the same with my first 5k... supposed to be doing 3 weeks of consolidation 30 minute runs and first time out I was running to the week 9 podcast but I’d started my watch from when I started running rather than from the warmup( I’d done it from the warm up during C25k) and when I was nearly finished I realised how close I was to 5k so I kept running and did my first one in fractionally over 40mins.
I’ve not shaved much of the time since but I was so chuffed I felt like I could have done it all over again
I shouldn’t really be online as I’m meant to be getting ready for a weekend away, but well done Jay - you beat me to the 5k. You have done brilliantly 👏
