Week 6: crazy runners

Yesterday I have finished my probably toughest week until now. First run went relatively smoothly as I went very slow. I actually tough there is another 8 minute interval at the end and was pleasantly surprised that the run was finished (did regret though not pushing bit harder on last interval). Second one was tougher, I was not feeling great that day overall. And finally I had scheduled run 3 for yesterday. Because I had busy day and evening ahead, I have realized that the only way to squeeze in the run would be if I do it in the morning. Only had very little time to spare so I jumped on the treadmill. And that was toughest one yet! I kinda got used to running outside, not being constrained to particular rhythm/style. From the very beginning of the run my calves were burning! Sometimes around minute 10 I thought to give up and almost did. My mistake was looking at the clock and those minutes seemed to last forever. Interesting part was that, for the first time, it was my legs that couldn't catch up with the rest of the body, until now it was exclusively the lungs. Somehow I kept going, steady and very slow; finally sometimes around 18th minute I realized that I can do it. So I did and it felt great! My legs were aching all day, even had to take some painkillers, but I was very happy with myself.

This week marked several 'firsts' in my short running career. In run 1 it was first time that I run along 'real' runners in the park. Until now I used empty trails and isolated parts of the park. In run 3 for the first time I felt that my lungs would let me run more than I was (but couldn't because of the legs). Also it was my first morning run (although not outside).

Oh, and in relation to the title: I was getting ready for one of my runs and put that phone strap around my arm. My son was looking at me and said 'dad, you look like one of those runners in the park'. I was like 'yeah?'. He said 'but dad, you said those people are crazy!'. I really don't remember saying that, but it sounds like something I would say just few months ago. Now I've joined the crazy bunch and it feels like I've always belonged.

Week 7 on horizon.

I can relate to that, I think the point where I actually bought an arm strap was the point where I started to think of myself as a runner as opposed to someone just trying it out..... more even than when I got some proper running shoes!

Funny you should say that. I'm also going to get new shoes soon, this time proper with gait analysis. Just waiting for my vouchers to arrive. The wife knows me as impulsive buyer, and usually stops me from buying stuff she knows I won't need. This time around she recognises that I'm hooked and suggested buying them. :)

Some great firsts there! :) Well done for getting through. The last few weeks were the best of the programme for me. Enjoy them - you'll be graduating before you know it! :)
