A cautionary tale of scent, silliness, sparkle and sunshine...

A beautiful cold morning, with early sunshine peeping through the curtains.

Up and out, after moving two very large and heavy boxes to the door, for collection by the Charity van, (they must be out by 8 a.m.) As I write they are still there...

No matter.. my run today, in spite of everything, was really enjoyable.

As I left the house, there was, for the first time this year, a sweetness in the air; not quite blossoms, but a definite scent of freshness, green-ness and growing things. I took a huge breath of it in.. and felt good. The road and pavements did not appear to be icy, but as I left the Close, I was aware, yet again of a sparkle in the ground..small diamonds catching the sunlight, so pretty and yet so treacherous!

I headed out at a sort of brisk walk, but on turning down the hill, to the village, it was obvious that the pavements were still very icy. Yes, I know, I should have turned around, but I really wanted to run. Very silly. So, a slow, staggered walk into the village, up the hill and past the school; running was impossible. The pathway by the school was pretty slippery and I was glad to reach Old Road. the sun was on one side of it, but the slick black, surface was still sparkling with ice.

So, I just walked; it gave me time to listen to the birds and think my own thoughts. Thinking about the super people on this site, and all the posts they write, their lives and mine intertwined in the wonderful enjoyment of running. On reaching the end of the lane, I nipped across and through a narrow gap in the hedge.. dog walkers use it, naughty I know, but I was feeling very unsafe on the road. The field was still frozen, but at least I thought, if I fall, it won't be as bad!

Switched Laura on, and her welcome voice was with me. A five minute walk, bumpy but safe.. and on into my current addiction...Stamina for the third run this week. (Curlygury2 did warn me this would happen). For a Graduate who has not tried this, just give it a go..it really is fun. The pace is not overly fast and is very steady, and as I said in a previous post, the whole run gives you time to just run and enjoy the run for itself. No pressure. The whole run feels very relaxed and gives you time to perfect different aspects of your running.

It is, though, quite difficult to concentrate on running style, on a frozen field, and as I ran down towards the brook, I was aware that it was getting slightly softer underfoot... and by the time I reached the bottom of the field, it was quite soggy and muddy...again! I realised, that I had taken so long getting to the fields that the sun was now melting the frost in certain areas. I tried to concentrate on my shoulders, and relaxing my fists, and not, now. getting stuck in mud...!

Round the two big fields, over the Steam railway track... sleepers still frost covered, ( gently does it), and a good flat, jog along the relatively firm, track, towards the next village, I ran around a large bush, startling a small bird, and back again towards the railway track.. back over, down the field and back up again... sunshine warm on my back at this point and really enjoying the run. Squeezed back through the gap in the hedge... lane still frozen, oops! :(

I was not able to do anything other than a very, very, very slow walk back down towards the main road; passing the scene of my Bambi on Ice, adventure, with trepidation.

I was conscious now, that I had been out for a very long time; my phone rang; A concerned voice..."Ermm, you seem to have been out quite a long time.. are you alright?"

After reassuring my husband I made my very slow way back home.

Juice waiting, telling off accepted.

Moral of this tale; when heading out on a sunny but frosty morning...proceed with extreme caution and if in any doubt..don't!

( But secretly, I'm glad I did).

Roll on Spring...:)

Totally right Rob. Message received and understood.

Funnily enough..this was the first morning when I didn't say which way I was going..

Thanks for the concern...it is appreciated. 😊

My experience this morning was very similar - going from ultra slippery to ultra muddy - it just seems a shame to have to keep looking at the ground all the time to keep safe. Still, it was a glorious morning!

Yes..lovely but dicey.

The sunshine was wonderful. 😊

Oooh Floss, I'll be glad when it's spring too so I can read your posts knowing there's no worry of you taking a slippy tumble on that ice! :) Good choice to get yourself to the fields, sounds like a lovely run and am glad you arrived back home safe, sound and happy :)

It's great that you're getting hooked on these stamina runs and they're letting you be a 'free' runner whilst you keep developing. Really like the idea of these, and your experiences give us (who dream of, and equally fear, the next stage post graduation) something to look forward to!

Well done today Floss :) x

You will soon be there. Lots to look forward to.hopefully in slightly better weather.😉

Yes..maybe not good for an old snail to run on ice..

Got to think of a new run plan now...feel the need for a new challenge.

Looking foward to your next post too.😊

Absolutely lovely as always Floss, really felt that I was there with you xxx

Aw how nice for your hubby to be concerned about you . Mine rang me whilst I was taking part in the GMR , wondering if I was collapsed in a heap somewhere, mind you it was a very hot day ! :-)

Well done for getting out there in the ice . It was very slippy on my walk to work this morning , so running in it mustve been scary !

Nice rest day for you tomorrow, dear Floss xxx

I love reading your posts, they give me such an insight of how it is for someone else, as you know from my post I fell victim to the ice this morning, will definitely take more care next time, good on your husband for checking in though, I always tell my husband or Dad how long I expect to be then add on 15 minutes or so and if I am not home they are to come and look for me! That was more so in the early days because I half expected to collapse into a heap in a bush!

Well, we are all in this together and I think it helps to know what folk are doing and how they feel. It certainly helps me..You did come a cropper, need to be careful.

I was dreading falling yesterday morning, even though I am not a, worrier about weather kind of gal. I am glad I ran, on the fields, but I shall not venture out when it is that icy, again.

It was weird, because I always tell my husband which way I am running too..

I always did it at the start too.. in case I needed picking up!!! :)

Lessons learnt! :)

What a lovely descriptive post. Felt like I came out with you reading it. xxx You are making me want to try that stamina run myself.

:) :) :) well done Oldfloss you are brilliant.

Try the run.. I think you will enjoy it. I loved the fields but not the ice; I certainly wish someone had been with me on the run! ! I was glad to get home in one complete piece!

Not brilliant at all... just a silly old thing, loving the running and the rambling and the company of folks like you.:)

You write beautifully! I love this post. It reminded me of my first run (when the dog ran home by himself, bored) my hubby came out looking for me, convinced I was dead in a ditch; it's great to have someone care 😊 x

It really is...I count my blessings every day.

I did feel guilty after my run for making him worry. Shall not be heading out if it is that icy again, however much sunshine there is!

Where you live looks absolutely beautiful... your photo was so atmospheric, you must love running there.:)x

Thank you, we live on the great Lancashire plain, it was perfect for when my daughter was growing up, then when we got a spaniel (although the local pheasant population wasn't as happy), last year I bought a bike for cycling along the hedge and honeysuckle lined lanes but only now I've started running do I truly appreciate the flatness! Sounds wonderful!

I have no dog.. but I had my first bicycle when I retired from teaching, (a leaving present from the parents and children!)

Have upgraded since then... as Staffs Moorlands are a tad hilly!!

I never realised how hilly, until I cycled and now, since running! :)

Still, it keeps us wonderfully fit and healthy... :)

That is what I keep telling myself anyway.

Looking forward to your next post :)

Morning floss. Beautiful post as ever. I'm especially impressed that you managed to even speak to your husband while running! I think my response would be a series of grunts and weird breathing noises! x

Blimey, I said it was addictive but I didn't expect you to do it every time you go out! I normally do it once a week or fortnight, you crazy runner you! The music gets into your head doesn't it? Yoooouuuu got me feeeeeeeeellling.....

Oldfloss profile image

Well yes... maybe a tad over the top..but having repeated three times over the last week, time to move on...for a while anyway. I am just not sure how to move on!

I still feel the need for a reassuring voice in the ear, to keep me focussed? Still feel a bit green, compared with all you better runners, even though I have moved on through the Couch to 5K+ podcasts..

Not sure how to progress in my running programme, from this point on! ??? :)
