I was diagnosed with CLL in 1997. I have had two lots of chemo in 2004 and 2008, and will be starting another course in Feb 2013. A friend, who is the president of the local Cancer Support Association here in France, recommended this book to me and there is a really interesting article on the website.

I hope everyone, and particularly the newly diagnosed will have a look at this. There is life after cancer, I carried on running in competition, until at the age of 73, I decided it was getting too much. I still go to a gym three times a week and do two sessions of aqua gym. So be positive, life is as good as you make it!

That's a fantastic attitude Tanagergreen, good for you! Long may it continue.

I'm fascinated at the claims about green tea and as much as I loathe it, I would drink it, sniff it or swim in it if I thought it would help! Can anyone advise? How many cups a day would one need to match the trial amounts? Or is it to be used on medical advisement?

Has this subsequent trial been undertaken?

Hello Newdawn. You can buy capsules to take by mouth at any health food shop, so no need to drink it - I loath it as well. I am afraid I know nothing more about the trial but shall keep checking the website.

The Mayo trials went to the end of Phase 2 ...

The EGCG used in the Mayo trials was a pharmceutical grade (Polyphenon E ) not available commercially. Nothing available commercially comes remotely close in dose or purity, and unsubstantiated claims abound from manufacturers....so similar results to the Mayo trials would be nearly impossible to achieve...

You couldn't drink enough tea in a day to get anything like the dose used...and the patients in the trials were stage 0 or 1 CLL. The company that produced the Polyphenon E , ended the trial to pursue other treatments for thier extract, like wart medicine.

Further, most EGCG extract come from China, where over use of pesticides on tea are a current major concern.

Thanks for that clarification Chris, it comes as no surprise to me that it would be impossible to replicate the dosage used in the trials by even excessive 'cuppa consumption'.

Is there however evidence that moderate use of green tea as a beverage (organic, Freetrade type) has a beneficial effect for people with CLL? It's antioxidant virtues are so often extolled, I'm frankly confused.
