mid-year covid vaccine

the CDC has recommended we immuno-suppressed get a second covid vaccine this year. i am getting mine tomorrow, six months after the 2023-24 first dose. What has your experience been with a second shot in a year? I have normally only gotten one but with this advisory, I decided to do. Your thoughts?

Hi ElMaga,

Since we are immune compromised, and if and when we get a viral infection (COVID-19, common flu or RSV) we are at greater risk of needing hospitalization, oxygen supplement, intensive care and death.

Getting all the available vaccines will lower the risk of needing the hospital, so whenever they announce a vaccine available, I get it the next day. The vaccine side effects are trivial to me.

so are they recommending 6 month boosters for just moderna or for pfizer too? and is this only for the immunocompromised or everyone? somehow i missed this recommendation? i get quite a severe reaction when i get the pfizer. 104.5 fever for 2 days and fever of 102 for another 2 days. really sets me back. i could stomach once a year.....but now twice. yikes

I also react to Pfizer. Temperature over 102F but only while sleeping on the day I have the jab and next day, this leaves me the worse for wear the day after those nights. This reaction has happened since I started on V+O. I had 2 doses of Pfizer before that and never noticed.

I think Len has it right don’t be too concerned about side effects. Six month intervals is what is being recommended. The piece of information I’ve found new is that with the 2023/2024 vaccine formulation you are not supposed to mix and match brands. I’m not sure why that is now the case?

Surprised to read that it is not a good idea to mix and match brands. I am hoping others in the CLL community will comment on this new information.

I got my booster yesterday.

My CLL specialist and I believe that a bad case of COVID last August triggered my CLL. I am going to get every booster as soon as it is recommended.

I got my Moderna Spikevax 23-24 Covid-19 booster two weeks ago, about 6 mo after my last booster. My only noticeable response was a sore arm. Fingers crossed that I made at least some antibodies!

I had a shot in September, and just did a six month later one. Sadly I felt flu-ish this time, which I didn’t last time. That might be from me recovering from FCR a year ago. But really no biggie, glad to have another covid booster doing its thing!

thanks, all. I had my shot today. So far all is good! Hoping I get the many antibodies I did previously!

I never had another one after the first three. My wife went through two bad viral infections since she had the covid that I didn't catch. And I didn't catch these either. In fact I have not been ill since December of 2018. If this does not prove that we are all different than nothing does. How this is possible I have no idea. I just hope that this lucky spell continues.
