My mum has had a high platelet count for around 8/9 years now. She was referred to a hematologist who thought she had essential thrombocythemia, her platelets were high, her red cells low and white within normal range! However she had a blood test done a week ago and her white cells were 100,000 , her platelets were still high and she still has low red cells. She was phone called two days later to come back in today to have more bloods. I'm starting to worry they misdiagnosed her and she might have leukemia or lymphoma instead .

Worried about mums blood test results.
Hi,You don't say when her previous test was done so we don't know how long her white cells have taken to get to 100,000 but ET is part of the myeloproliferative disorder spectrum of diseases. It's not rare for one, such as ET, to develop and transform into one of the other myeloproliferative diseases such as myelofibrosis or even acute leukaemia.
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia is also a possibility and very easily treated these days with a pill every day. I do not know of a lymphoid leukaemia or lymphoma that has a high platelet count as part of the symptoms so I would be pretty sure that the original diagnosis is correct.
Please let us know what they say

For many years I had elevated platelets (600 - 800) which was diagnosed as Essential Thrombocythemia. I was just put on daily aspirin for treatment. After 10 yrs , it morphed into CLL, and my platelets are now in the low normal range. No treatment yet. Indie.
