Reactions to AZ vaccine

I had the AZ vaccine on Tuesday (I'm on w&w). I was fine all day after. On the following day I had the expected feeling tired and a bit poorly, nothing too bad. Ok the next day. But on Friday evening I got a red rash on the my left are (the arm in which I had the vaccine) and felt a bit rough. Ok the next morning

I got a red, hot, hard patch 3 days after shot in that arm. Went to doctor, he told me it is a new listed reaction. It will go away in about4 days. I can use an itch cream if needed. Hope you are not feeling too much discomfort. Sandra😊

Hi. I developed ‘covid arm’ ten days after having the Astra Zeneca vaccine. Large red And hot raised area about size of my palm. Still there after four days. Tried to report to doctor but receptionist said they were not keeping records of reactions. Left name in case doctor was concerned/ interested! Tried to report on yellow card system but was very medically orientated and lengthy so ashamed to say I gave up! Not overly concerned as obviously connected to the vaccine. Don’t know if any link to CLL (watch and wait). Jude

Hey Jude. Thanks for your response. Was it just at the injection site? I have reported it on yellow card. Which seems like a really good system.

Jude, today, day 4, raised patch is now flat, heat and redness diminishing. Itching and discomfort a problem, so ibuprofen and hydrocortisone cream. I do get relief. We are “rolling along” with determination. 😜Sandra

We are having a problem in the UK with injection hygiene...

Hospital Haematology: always clean our skin with alcohol swab

Primary Care (GP): new guidance is that this alcohol swab is not necessary

I detect cost-cutting.. bureaucrats at work.

Hospital phlebotomy are shocked when I tell them.. ditto CLL treatment staff.

We CLL’ers must verbally request:

“I am immune compromised.

— Please use an alcohol swab before the injection.”

They always have got the swabs, just that average patient guidance says they are not required.

CLL’ers — we are not average patients. We are special.

I suspect a rash/reaction at the injection site may often reflect an infectious process caused by the lack of skin hygiene pre-jab.

Thanks for the response.

I suspect this too. I have developed a lump in the armpit (same side as injection site) and suspect that this is related, the timing indicated this is likely. I suspect its an inflamed lymph node, but as I haven't experienced this before, I don't know what I'm looking for. I will speak to the CCL nurse tomorrow.

Swollen lymph nodes are an expected outcome.. But a localised skin infection on same side, especially for those with currently low neutrophils and/or hypogammaglobulinaemia .. well, such infection can see localised swollen lymph nodes in the normal way.

My local COVID19 vaccine centre got some things right..

- clinically vulnerable patients treated on a dedicated day

But failed at..

- alcohol swabs pre jab

- window opening for ventilation = exhaled aerosol mitigation

It was all rather odd / unsatisfactory.. much as the organising GP meant well..
