Deeply concerning indeed! 😟 I feel for the NHS and Care Staff trying to manage this demand. So many people starting the new year with great suffering.

Yeah, I'm in NI and we have much lower care capacity per capita than anywhere else in the UK. I guess that's what happens when, on the occasions your devolved gov is sitting, you argue about what flag should be flown when, or what language should be supported instead of matters which have real impact on ALL citizens, like healthcare. So having rumbled along at around 500 new cases per day for a while these last 3 days have been 1500/2000/1900. I guess that's the price of Christmas. 6 free beds in all hospitals today. There's 5.5 k cases of which a % will need care in the coming weeks. It doesn't take a hotshot mathematician (I'm, 1982 grade E mathematics, or is a Pass) to see this doesn't compute. The vaccine will make a difference but not until St Pats or Easter at the earliest.y employer has issued guidance that I shouldn't come to work, but that it is only advice. I should consider the covid secure environment that's been set up and it is only advice. I see that as if you come to work it's at my own risk/ don't come gurnimg to us if you catch it. That's fine, I understand. The medical advice is not to attend work so I won't. Thankfully a gov dept so very risk averse and whilst they will happily park me at home for 5/ 6 weeks on a role which can't be done from home I rather fancy a role which truly can be. I'm not a shirker but can I honestly say mid Feb will see this pandemic attenuated to the point where it will be safe to attend work daily? Will further measures be needed? How long is a piece of string. Happy new year to all, let's hope 2021 puts corona beyond concern and we can relax. Nothing is promised, and that is fine.

Incidentally when there is a briefing we have Arlene (Dup/unionist/protestant) jointly with Michelle (sinn fein/nationalist/Catholic) and 2 sign language interpreters (Irish and English) on the screen. It does amuse me that the signs in Irish and English are very different. Anyway, again peace and love, good will to all.

Although I'm lucky enough to be in a pretty safe place in the world right now (but never complacent) I feel so much for my friends and relatives in both the UK and the USA (and Denmark), and of course all of you posting to HU. I wish I could do more than wring my hands !

Yes, it’s truly awful. A friend of a friend has just told me that their son in law had been shielding, but got Covid ( possibly from their school aged child) and has sadly died...aged just 45

Please stay safe,

Fran 😕
