Both Ibrutinib and Acalabrutinib were first tested on canines before the human phase 1 trial began. Just Google it and you can read about the studies and test results. If I remember correctly the study population was 20 dogs in each case.

I haven't seen any of the human CLL meds (other than RCHOP chemotherapy) named. However the following talks in general terms of Immunotherapy and mentions one risk as cytokine storms.

I would wonder about the dosage size possibility for most dogs. Also, note the site also talks about what is true in human CLL---the versatility of CLL in each animal.

From the looks of this article, there is at least some changes being considered and the wish to stop administering chemo. Note also, "not treated unless there are symptoms.

I asked my speciality vet about ibrutinib being used for animals when someone local had some that he wanted to donate. It’s illegal to donate to

people, so I thought that maybe it could go to a vet practice. She said that it wasn’t being used outside of perhaps trials to her knowledge. I would think that dosing would be an issue, except maybe for larger dogs.

Is this for a specific dog with an actual diagnosis of CLL? I had a cat years ago who developed CLL. I haven’t seen anyone else mention it in a pet.

Thanks all for the replies. Yes, it is for a specific dog with an initial diagnosis we got yesterday. Our sweet beagle looks exactly like I did before starting on Imbruvica; lumps all around the neck growing fast to the point that people can now easily notice. Imbruvica reduced the size of mine within days and have been under control now for awhile. Would love for her to have something similar to a pill vs. chemo, that is not wickedly costly. Will see what the oncology vet shares next week and maybe we can find a trial. So so grateful for this forum!

Golden retrievers are the most likely to get lymphoma so I suggest searching one of those databases for canine Ibrutinib trials and studies. I had lots of emails about this from my golden retriever club, if find those will post to your thread.

Hi zenmadre, Here are some links to research, and still looking through my mail, note that some of these are dated 2016 from American Kennel Club Health Foundation. Pretty sure the landscape has changed as fast for dogs as it has for us.

The first also has research links at top and how to participate:

I am not sure what country you are in but large Universities in the US have trials at the veterinary schools. Oddly, I go to OSU for my CLL specialist and OSU also has one of the best veterinary schools. See what Universities close to you have.
