Such a valuable article from a breast cancer surgeon who became a cancer patient himself and admits he thought he knew everything but in fact knew nothing until he was in the patient’s chair.

He will be a very valuable resource as he hopefully returns fully well to his cancer patients and this comment from him struck me;

‘When I get back to practicing again, I will ask patients what they want to know.’

Worth reading...

Thank you for posting this Judyanne. I think all doctors who treat cancer patients should read this or maybe every junior doctor and nurse should read it as part of their training.

Thank you for sharing this great article Judyanne. I read a book called When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanthi . He was a neurosurgeon diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in his mid to late 30s. What I took from the book was how humbling he found the experience of becoming a patient and how he realised that medics (not all) had lost sight of the patient and their humanity . I sent a copy to the a**hole Haematologist who gave me my diagnosis as if he was telling me I had an ingrown toenail ! I never went back to him so I don’t know if he ever read it . It’s a sad book , beautifully written and I’d highly recommend it to everyone .

Thank you very much for referring such a wonderful book.

Hey Judyanne:

Thank you for starting this conversation. You may want to watch this movie - THE DOCTOR. It is a 1991 drama film directed by Randa Haines. It's loosely based on Dr. Edward Rosenbaum's 1988 book, A Taste Of My Own Medicine. The film stars William Hurt as Jack MacKee, a self-centered doctor who is diagnosed with cancer. He undergoes a transformation in his views about life, illness and human relationships.
