Always get good advice from you guys. I was diagnosed with GCA in February and put on 50 mg then went down to 35 mg. Been miserable ever since. I seem to have 2 to 3 days of feeling good then 2 to 3 days of blurry eyes shakes sweats and fatigued and insomnia. The only thing that helps is sleep. I cannot commit to much as not sure when l am going feel bad. I am surposed to go down to 30mg next week. Why am l getting these highs and lows. I do not want to go back on 40mg. Very frustrated. Can you help?

ryliefew123, you have posted to the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia forum on HealthUnlocked. I think you may have meant to post another HU Forum.

Your situation sounds dreadful and I hope you get some help soon.

Hi there,

I presume you mean Giant Cell Arteritis so this answer is based on that premise.

I understand that you would want to reduce and stop your steroids but it isn’t always possible to stop steroids completely. You'll usually need to take them for 1-3 years because the inflammation can come back if your dose is reduced or stopped too quickly. If you have a relapse (which usually occurs within 18 months) your steroid dose may have to be increased again.

Although you need the steroids for the GCA it will mess up your lymph count and can also interfere with glucose control if you’re diabetic.

My best suggestion is to closely follow your Dr’s advice about prednisone dose and don’t try to speed up the process of tapering because it could set you back.

Good luck with it all.
