I was encouraged by the folks here to go to the ER with a similar fever when I had neutropenia. I was admitted for a 4 day stay even though I never got really sick. I knew I was getting the treatment and isolation I needed to avoid that. So even if he never feels like it was necessary, please know that you did the right thing. It's much better to catch early an infection that your body can't fight than to try to fight it back once it takes hold.

I've had the same experience only two longer stays. In both cases there was no question about admitting me, because ER hospital staff know how serious this situation can be, even if the patient appears well. In my local hospital, they treat neutropenic patient attending ER in a similar manner to suspected heart attack patients - very seriously.
