Apart from the dip in Platelets due to nasty cough / Antibiotics I hope all seems pretty stable I guess. Some figures are missing due to whoever did the letter.

You've been holding steady until this drop in your platelet level Jules. As others have said in the other thread, a nasty infection and certain types of medication can impact on platelets but your specialist will want to keep a close eye on this. All is looking fairly stable apart from the platelet level.

Infection, higher alcohol intake, use of anti-inflammatories like naproxen and ibuprofen and acid reducing drugs like ranitidine can all cause the platelets to drop.

There is always the possibility of the much rarer condition ITP which is explained here;

'The immune-mediated thrombocytopenic purpura, also known as ITP is a condition marked by the development of antibodies against platelets. This attack of antibodies to normal cells is what causes low platelet count levels in patients with ITP. It then leads to immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.'

Your platelets are still well within safe limits however so absolutely no need for panic. You'll still be able to 'fly' I'm sure! :-)

Hi Newawn thank you for this I also take Lansaprozole so lets hope it's just a hiccup

Whats the lowest I can go and still ride the bike :-) I always check the WBC thinking that's the important one but I guess they all are.

I will be on to the Churchill in the morning to see what they have to say.

Be guided by your doctors on this Jules but here's the guidance chart for platelets,

Platelet countRisk of bleeding

>100.000/µLNo abnormal bleeding, even after surgery

50.000–100.000/µLThe patient may bleed more than normal after serious injury

20.000–50.000/µLHemorrhage comes at a smaller injury

<20.000/µLThe patient may bleed spontaneously

You're well within safe limits at the moment but mention the lansoprazole because it has been known to decrease platelet levels in some people.

Best wishes,

Newdawn

Foods and beverages can also effect platelet function... even with good counts... Fish oil capsules and Quinine in tonic water... ASA in many OTC pain relievers etc...

Something to bear in mind...

Dark chocolate, foods with low glycemic index, garlic, ginger, omega-3 PUFA, onion, purple grape juice, tomato, and wine all reduce platelet aggregation

Some foods can cause low platelets and eliminating them from the diet may help raise the platelet count. The most common offenders are foods that contain quinine (tonic water, bitter lemon, bitter melon), aspartame (diet soda, sugar-free and low-fat candy and cakes) or alcohol (beer, wine, hard liquor).
