This definition taken from webmd describes a 'normal temperature';

'Most people think of a "normal" body temperature as an oral temperature of 98.6°F (37°C). This is an average of normal body temperatures. Your temperature may actually be 1°F (0.6°C) or more above or below 98.6°F (37°C). Also, your normal body temperature changes by as much as 1°F (0.6°C) throughout the day, depending on how active you are and the time of day. Body temperature is very sensitive to hormone levels and may be higher or lower when a woman is ovulating or having her menstrual period.

A rectal or ear (tympanic membrane) temperature reading is slightly higher than an oral temperature reading. A temperature taken in the armpit is slightly lower than an oral temperature reading. The most accurate way to measure body temperature is to take a rectal temperature.'

So a normal temp ranges from 97.5 and 98.9 but some people function outside of that range (said to be about 5% of the population).

Your temperature is therefore lower than average at 96 degrees and there may be reasons for that which need to be explored with your physician. Infection, under-active thyroid, diabetes, adrenal or kidney problems etc. can account for it or indeed the way the temperature is being taken. Just after a bath can give an inaccurate reading.

Are you generally feeling well and has your doctor mentioned looking at your thyroid function Ava?

I have heard that people with cancer can have a body temperature slightly lower than normal. Mine is usually around 97.2 - 97.4 even when I feel very hot internally.

It's something that maybe needs exploring further with your physician to put your mind at rest.

Interesting, my twin sister (who is overall pretty healthy all her life) and I are pretty much the only 2 people who we know before tonight to ever have such low body temps. We generally use the under the tongue thermometers and both of us generally range (at Drs. offices and at home) about 96.8-97.4 all the time. No one has ever commented on it so I don't. the only time I did was when I ran 100, I argued with an idiot nurse saying yes for me this is a fever, check my charts. And that was just so she'd get me into see my Dr.

So far the highest I have had for chemo was once 99.4.

My older sister runs normal, after 40+ years my dad did say he tends to run normal (umm hello we've been commenting how abnormal this is for so many years and you just getting around to telling us this???)

But like I said no one seems to care, I've had my Thyroid checked.

Nice to know I am not along :)
