Consider Statin Therapy? Is it necessary for a total cholesterol of 6 mmol/L?

I had my annual blood test, the total cholesterol is 6.0 mmol/L.

My GP had put a comment in the results print out, " Consider Statin"?

Do you think that is too high or too low? I seem to remember when statins were first mentioned to me 6 was considered high normal - now doctors seem to want everyone to be as low as 4 or 5.

The level seems to be dropping all the time - obviously I’m no expert but I’d say it looks like the lowering of the levels may well be driven by very powerful pharmaceutical companies.

Thank you for your response. For me 6 is OK, I do not need to go on statin medication.

All I wanted to see was hoe members look at a total cholesterol level of 6.

I’d be ok with that - mine was 7 last time I was tested.

😉 I’d love to be 5.5 but I can’t see it. Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. Hope you reach your 5.5

In January 2016 my cholesterol was 9.1. By March 2016 it was 5.4. My doctor said in January that he did not think I could lower it much by my diet but I proved him wrong. Sadly diets fly out of the window and it's now 8. I ate every food that said it helped to lower cholesterol and took olive oil every day, also lecithin granules. I'm now taking a statin once a week after having a very bad reaction to them. So far, so good but I will not be taking more than that.

I think the key word on your doctor's notes is 'consider'. When I had a diabetes test earlier this year, I was borderline and the lab notes said 'consider medication'. My GP asked me if I wanted him to prescribe medication, we discussed it and I told him I'd prefer to try to get my sugar levels down by improving my diet (I know I have a sweet tooth!). On the follow-up, I had succeeded, so case closed for now, unless they increase again. So I think the word 'consider' means that he's not necessarily making a recommendation, but wants to flag it as something you might want tp think about.

An up date.

AS there was a delay in getting an appointment with diabetic nurse, my appointment with diabetic nurse is on 17th January.

I wanted to understand on the comments in the printed copy of blood test results, I saw a GP, last Thursday. I am on 5 mg statin, rosuvastatin. My GP explained that by considering all my health record it is necessary to start statin medication. Lipid blood test after three months.

It appears my urine test gave some concern!!, I have an appointment with the urology department on Friday 12th January, referral and appointment with in a week.

Mail on line gave good information on the NHS APP. If you have access to NHS APP, please take a look at health information. More information is available compared to GP practice one line medical record.

More update later on.

I belong to that school of thought that would never touch statins with a barge pole. I tried three of them after suffering a stroke in 2018 and had the same bad reaction to all three. Never again!
