First of all I welcome you warmly to this forum and I hope you'll find us useful and supportive. You might well be able to claim Carer's Allowance in addition to your current payment of what is now known as PIP (Personal Independence Allowance). As always, there are rules to be met, so you really need some specific advice based on your personal circumstances.

I can't really add to MAS_Nurse's suggestion to check out the Pinned Posts section on this page. I do always recommend seeking the help of your nearest CAB (citizens' advice bureau). They are wizards in financial matters and can clear through all the muddle and difficulty of trying to claim on your own, and they can give specific help based on your own circumstances, so do think of getting in touch with your nearest branch.

All Citizens Advice Bureau near me closed down quite some time ago now and there is no longer advocacy service any more they too closed down so there is nothing like that now and sometimes my dad and I could have done with them many of times they used to be really helpful in dealing with complicated forms etc finance wise. I believe they were going to close a lot more down across the UK. I recommend them if there is one in your area. We miss them here .

Fair point paula 191. Sadly lots of them are gone now, but it's probably still worth mentioning that they do have a website at citizensadvice.org.uk. (And that reminds me that officially they are now just called Citizens' Advice). You can search there for other branches which might be able to give telephone advice if you are unable to get in to one, or can't find the advice you are looking for elsewhere.

But like you I do think it's a real shame so many of us have lost a great source of local help.

Hello rubyandily421, yes your partner can claim Carers Allowance if you get DLA or PIP. People can only get Carers Allowance if they care for someone more tgan 35 hours a week and the person they care for must be in receipt of either DLA, PIP or Attendance Allowance. Hope this helps.

Carers allowance is paid to anybody who looks after someone for 35hrs plus a week..my wife is on d la so I get carers allowance..but as I'm on pension credit i don't get the full amount..also she had to be above the lowest amount for me to get it..not sure if the same thing applies to pip...if you have a carer visiting you this may affect the amount you have to pay..carers allowance does not affect other benefits as it's a non taxable benefit..unlike your pension and pension credit
