Leg & Arms problems

I am having problems with my legs & arms while lying down I get a painful tinkling sensation up & down both my legs & arms, its like electric shock sensation, just had my GP along & she is doing blood tests but said it's likely something to do with the way you are sleeping, I explained that I used to have a 6ft 1inch single adjustable bed with a hard mattress through the OT even there softest one, so been looking for grants to help me purchase one, so told this to my GP & she said well see how you go then, I said but they said a GP or medical person has to recommend me, she just changed the subject.

Can anyone suggest a way forward for me on this issue please as got 7 rheumatic conditions & nerve damage to my spine, as well as a lot of other conditions?

Hi Kenny, if you need a GP recommendation then that’s what your GP needs to provide. Changing the subject is just not good enough.

Hi Kenny,

Sorry to hear of your problem. I suppose there's no short-cutting the intervention of your GP if that's the official route to help with a new orthopaedic bed.

I wonder whether the GP you saw didn't really realise that you needed his/her input. Perhaps when you said that your last bed was via an OT department, he/she wrongly assumed that's the route you were going to take. You could have another appointment with your GP to discuss, and make it plainer that you need a medical recommendation, or if it's difficult to do that, write to the manager of your GP Practice, setting out exactly what's needed and asking for one of the GPs to provide what's necessary.

It seems never to be simple where costs are involved, does it? But the best of luck with this anyway.

I was told I needed a bed that was higher at the head end so I rang occupational therapy who refused to send anyone then rang the docs who said they couldn't help phone occupational therapy which I did and again they wouldn't help. It's a bit like banging your head on a brick wall. My solution I put all curtains that I am not using bedding and now have the bed I need. I wish you lots if luck and sincerely hope you have better luck than me

Hi starveycat, sorry to hear you having problems with your OT I got a single adjustable bed from them & it was only 6ft 1inches long & I am 6ft 3.5inches tall plus there softest mattress was too hard, our OT here in Oldham are fairly good they help me get a 2 bedroom bungalow as my bungalow only has small rooms & my newest electric wheelchair is big so not enough room to maneuver around without damaging everything but they did say could have to wait up to 12 months for one.

Maybe you could ask another GP in the practice to write in support of your applications, or your rheumatologist, physiotherapist or OT. A home assessment by an community OT, nurse or social worker may help too. Just some food for thought. Also, there are many small charities off the mainstream radar who have little pots of money that can make small financial grants which together can help. I had to do this to purchase a mobility scooter, and having approached one well-known nursing charity, they then signposted me to two obscure ones and together their funding met the cost. My OT supported my application. Keep pushing doors and don't give up!!
