hi i`m new to this and in need of some advice i currently care for my 1yr old daughter who was born with spina bifida i gave up work to be her full time carer i need advice as i`m having issues with the OT they have never been out to asses my daughter and have told me that i cannot have a shower seat for her to sit in when she is in the shower as she is 2 young i know of families with young kids who have additional needs have the seats the shower i have is a walk in shower we have to hold her if we shower her she is currently getting bathed in a large storage box which is unsuitable if i`m on my own as a cannot lift it.

is there anyone that can give me info on how to get a shower aid from the ot or to get her to come out and asses my daughter as each time i call i get stone walled i`m not getting listened to i`m at my wits end x

Hello Shazzaz79

Thank you for your message. I am sorry that you have so much to deal with and such difficulty with getting an occupational therapist to give an assessment.

You might consider going to your GP or doctor who may be able to talk with the OT or suggest further referral. You could also talk to your Health visitor about your situation.

Our members are supportive, so may also be able to offer more help and information. May be you can tell us more about your circumstances?

There is a web forum called The Children's Trust that you could look at.

The topics and pinned posts may also offer you more information.

Do keep in touch and let us know how things are for you and your daughter.

Hello Shazzaz79, how are you getting on, have you managed to get an appointment with your GP yet? Also I have been giving your problem some more thought. Some Councils also have a community aid/mobility shop as do the Red Cross. Also what about getting the Health Visitors from the baby clinic on your side. The last thing any health professional person would want is for you to be suffering from a bad back due to heavy lifting.

Also for extra support why not put your daughters ups and downs on our 'feel good Friday' posts. I am sure the other members would love to hear about her and her progress. We are here for you and your family. Xmas is a magical time especially with children. What is her name by the way? (if you don't mind sharing that info with us).

Very best wishes.

Hi Shazzaz79,

As well as The Children's Trust, which is a fantastic charity, there is another charity called Demand Design and Manufacture for Disability demand.org.uk/ you might like to make contact with. They have a team of amazing engineers to come up with unique solutions to the problems disabled people and their carers can face. It could well be worth a conversation.
