hello i am new here. i care for my husband who has ‘learned helplessness’ diagnosed by a psychiatrist and a psychologist. It basically means he has a superior memory and superior intelligence but acts as though he cannot do anything for himself. It means he is completely dependent upon other people.

Welcome JulieVictoria, I’ve never heard of that before. I hope that you get help with your husband and wish you all the best. Xxx

Hi JulieVictoria. I have never heard of that condition before but it sounds very difficult for both you and your husband. Did the psychiatrist/psychologist have any ideas on treatment?

in reply to EM1234

until my husband is willing to accept treatment no. At the current time he is still in denial that there is anything wrong. It took two years before he was even willing to be tested by anyone.

Hi JulieVictoria

You have just described my husband! It started 7years ago. He was given antidepressants but they sit in the drawer. He refuses to leave the house and is wasting away as he also has COPD. I know what it must be like every day for you and I hope you gather some help from this website Cas

Hi Julievictoria and welcome to the forum. This sounds difficult for both you and your husband. It is good that you have completed a carer's assessment, as there is help available. Please have a look at the pinned and related posts to the right of the screen where you will find helpful information. Has your husband received any occupational therapy? This may help him. You may find it helpful to discuss this with the other health professions who are involved in his care. Please stay on the forum so you can receive support from other members. Thank you and best wishes.
